If you define a puppymill as a place where hundreds of dogs are kept in outdoor kennel/cages to breed, yes they are a puppymill. Some puppymills are probably better than others. Some probably get vet treatment, and adopted when they are no longer capable of breeding. Some are just put to death when they get sick or can't breed, and it's not always in a merciful way. They will breed anything, and breeding to standard isn't important, health testing isn't important, the only thing that is important is selling cute puppies. In many ways they are like the backyard breeder, just a bigger operation.

It's a list of all USDA breeders...it could be dogs, livestock, hedgehogs, exotic animals like monkeys.

However, the dog breeders listed on there....must keep their animals in kennels and cages OUTSIDE of their homes.

Keep in mind...USDA breeders can own up to 250 breeding pairs at one time.

Dog breeders on that list can sell commerically to brokers or pet stores. They are not real concerned where their puppies end up.

Unfortunately, most dogs are bred this way. Dogs sold at pet stores and websites are obtained through commercial breeders. Finding a reputable breeder isn't an easy task. Just wanted to add that these dogs aren't necessarily inferior to a show breeder's dog, it's just that the dog's parents live in horrible conditions.

I just feel so bad... I know he found the original pup on the web and he bought her for me. When the pup passed she wouldn't give us the $$ back because it was like the 15th day that we had her...I should have known then. She did sent us a replacement who is bigger and healthier.

Well now you know. At least the breeder was conscientious enough to send the replacement puppy. I'm glad she's healthy

I've been called a hypocrite too often. Yelling at the hubby is fun though, it may not do any good, but it sure is stress reliever.

That right, you're the expert of the soft approach. I think if we each post pictures of contents our jewelry boxes, we will learn that the soft approach works best, that is, if your the sort of girl who likes jewelry.

okay this might be a stupid question but i'm going to ask anyways. my breeder is on the list but my dog is AKC registered. Does that make it better? Or does that even matter at all? I thought when a dog is AKC register, it conforms to breed standards.

Being akc registered means the sire and dam were akc registered...it means nothing regarding the standard. Ramsey is akc and also weighs 12 pounds...far out of standard. You can be assured of your dog's pedigree though...also akc makes random inspections, requires dna of the dogs and record keeping.

I would still avoid a USDA breeder...akc or not.

No, not necessarily, as long as long as the dog's parents were AKC and the breeder has breeding rights, and is in good standing, the offspring can be registered. The AKC does do kennel inspections, but as long as they pass state laws the kennel passes, that's why it's important to get good state laws in regards to kennel conditions. The AKC is trying to get poor breeders off its registries, but they have to be extremely bad in order to do this, and other registries openly accept them, so beware of the alternative registries. It means little to nothing that a breeder is AKC registered. There are dishonest breeders in every regisrty. There are many millers who breed AKC dogs too.
