Default What is your vet's neuter/spay procedure?

I am trying to take a poll to see what some of your vets neuter procedures are.

Wall-E is almost 5 months old and he's starting to mark our furniture so I figure that now is a good time to get him neutered. When I called me vet, they said I need to drop him off in the morning and leave him there all day eventhough the procedure takes only 20 minutes. I'm okay with this because I work during the day anyway, so it works better for my shcedule but at the same time I want to make sure this sounds normal. This is the same vet that I took Wall-E to get his vaccinations and eventhough I specifically requested that they administer the shots in front of me, they still took him to the back room to do it- which was really frustrating, so I'm thinking of switching vets but since they have all of Wall-E's paperwork on file, I might just get him neutured there. ANy thoughts? As long as I can confirm that an allday neuter stay is "normal" then I'll do it at this place... thanks for the help!

Yes that is normal. When mine were done they were dropped off in the morning and picked up at 4. Even though the procedure doesnt take long there is a recovery period and they want to watch him through that

Hi, all day stay is normal around here. I'm not too fond of the idea that they take them away from you for shots. Never heard of that before, at least not around here.
When we moved here 4 yrs ago I spent more time interviewing vets than I did doctors for myself. I even moved from the one that we thought would be best (only 4 blocks from our house) to the one that the most people recommended (8 miles away).

My vet wouldn't neuter until 6 months.

I dropped off between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and picked up about 4.

My vet administers shots and check-ups in the exam room where we are present. He has a vet tech in the room also. She holds Conner while he gives shot or takes blood for blood work. I would not like them to take him to another room.

Hi,
Yes, it is normal procedure to have your pet stay there all day. However, I remember your post about the how they took your baby w/o you there.
i'd be looking for a different place to take him for his surgery. They still put him under, and if I had any concerns with a vet place at all, I would not ever let them do a procedure that involves putting my animal under.
For me I have to have trust in my vet and the place . It would be hard if they had already done something in the past that I questioned.
you may be better off looking around for a better vet hospital.

I just picked Baxter up from his neuter this morning. He went in yesterday morning at 8:00, had the surgery about 10. The vet called me about 11, said that he was waking up and fine. Their proceedure is they have an RN there at night to watch them and make sure they aren't going to have any problems, the vet checks them out the next morning when he gets in, then you can pick them up. Baxter is fine.

I think you should find another vet before the surgery. Vet records aren't like medical records; it's not a big hassle to switch vets like it is to switch Dr's. Basically all they need is the shot record and info about any special needs and they usually are willing to take the owners word for it. Vets also don't face the same restriction, so your new vet could simply call the old one and ask them to fax the records. If any vet picked up my pup and took them out of the room, I would simply follow them. There is no reason to take the dog out for shots. With the exception of spay/neuter and boarding my pets have never been out of my sight at the vets. The allday thing is normal for males, females usually stay overnight.

All day stay for neutering / spaying is fine but NOT removing the dog to another room just for shots. I hold my own puppy when he gets shots by the vet.

I think you need to trust your instincts on this important decision. If you feel any hesitation at all about this vet or the office staff, you need to do the right thing by your pup and switch. Like others have said, its not too hard to get the paperwork moved over, and you want to feel totally trusting of the person who is a key connection between you and your pup's health.

Although I've only had girl pups, from what I understand its a good thing that the vet wants to keep him around all day to keep an eye on him.

Best of luck and blessings to you both!

Thanks everyone. You've been a big help. My feelings on this have been so counter-intuitive that I didn't know what to do- this vet got GREAT reviews and recommendations and is literally down the street from my house so I thought it was a perfect match, but everytime I go in there, I just don't like it very much. I think I'm gonna switch vets. Thanks again for all the responses! Makes me feel alot better

Yes it is my Diddy was neutered today. Took him at 8.00 am and picked him up at 5.30 pm. The have to ensure that there is no adverse reaction to the anesthetic.

Default neuter

I took in my Sammy four weeks ago to get neutered. I dropped him off at 7:30 am and wasn't going to pick him up until the next morning. I do trust the vets as they have been recommended by a lot of people with small pets. They have taken Sammy out of the room before to do different things, but it didn't bother me. I called at 1:30 pm, and Sammy was fine. However, at 2:30 pm, he began to get distressed. By 3:00 pm, he was gone. He had a severe allergic reaction to the anesthesia. We were devastated. He would have been 1 year old in September. I went in on Monday morning to talk to the vet again. She explained what had happened. She said in the four years she had worked there, she hadn't seen this happen. I don't know how we could have known this. These are such everyday operations. Most do not go wrong. I still go to this vet (we just got a girl from the same breeder with the same mom as Sammy's). I still trust them and know they did everything they could.

So, you have to trust the vet you use. If you do not "feel" good about this one, then ask around. I work at a high school and have to sometimes stop to say to myself, "I do these types of things every day. However, the parents don't. I need to stop and explain what is going on." If you share your concerns with the vet, he/she should take the time to talk with you about your concerns.

I know things will go well for you. I hope you find a vet you are comfortable with!!

My Vet spays at 5 months but I don't know neuter age.

She couldn't eat or drink after 10:00 pm the night before
I took her in at 8:00 a.m. and was able to pick her up at 3:00 pm.

I don't know if it was the pain pills or the anesthetic, but she had loose stool for 2 days after surgery and they had to give her Pro-Pectalin.

Appetite didn't come back for a few days so I made sure I gave her the Nutri-Cal 3 x day.

Hope this helps.
