| Grooming question .. I had both dogs groomed last week at the cost of 70 dollars! I have my maltese done in a puppy cut leaving the tail longer. My yorkie is fairly short in the face ,legs, belly but I leave the hair from his back a little longer. If I didnt he would look like a bald little old man.. He is terrified of clippers so they did a scissor cut. There nails were also trimmed. I have been seriously thinking of learning to groom them myself. I have been looking at clippers online and wondered if anyone could advise me on which to buy to start.. Im not interested in spending 100 's but it looks like I might be able to buy a clipper for 125 or so.. As far as there nails I was thinking of the pedicure I see advertised on TV. I cannot cut there nails . it always scares me. Anyway with 2 dogs to groom it would not take long before I would be saving money..Any advise ? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have 4 dogs, 3 of them yorkies in full coat. There is no way I can afford to have them groomed professionally so I just started doing it myself after I got the 2nd yorkie 1 1/2 years ago. I learn as I go. I buy good products, have a goor scissors, dematter, slicker brush and comb and pin brush. I just learn by trial and error. I just now gave all 3 a bath and finished drying, trimming and combinbg out 2 and have 1 more to go. It takes me about 2 hours do do all three. I also have a grroming table and a small clipper for trimming ears etc. I don't know how to do short cuts that would be harder for me. But it's only hair and it will grow back, I figure. So far they look pretty good when I am done, I am having trouble with nails they just won't sit still for that. So I would get a good clippers and see what you can do.I have the Wahl chromini clippers, I have heard good things about Wahl. Good luck

| I groom my baby.... but mostly all it takes is trimming around the ears.. eyes if want the bangs and nails and paws. I bought a 20.00 clipper (very small) for ears and feet. Emma loves to have the hair between her pads trimmed. she sleeps while I do that.. I trim the *under the tail* area with small hair cutting scissors. for the nails I use a dremmel. It works very well for me. For hair in the ear.... just grab it and pull. Emma loves that part too. |

| yes u do, just the fine hair in the ears bit by bit, a quick pull and they dont seem to notice, I have clipped my furby for the first time, first with scissors and then with a crufts pair of clippers starting with the biggest size first and then working down, kinnys is now in a puppy cut and im very pleased with a first result, its a bit choppy round the tail area (she kept wriggling ). It took a couple of eves to get her used to the clippers and we did it in short sessions over 3 eves so as to make it a plesent experiance with no stress on either side, good luck it will be worth it !! |

| if you want good professional clippers I would get oster or andis A5 clippers. They have an interchangeable blade. They usually come with a #10 blade which is pretty short and good for sanitary areas and ears. I would also get a #3 or #4 blade if you want to do a puppy cut. They are longer blades. Also get a can of clipper cool. I would also get a quality slicker brush and greyhound comb. I would also order some straight shears and some curved shears. That should pretty much get you started...try PetEdge.com Wholesale prices on exclusive dog grooming and pet supplies they have pretty good deals. If your baby has a topknot, they are also a good place to order grooming bands and topknot gel. $70 seems like alot, but it's really not a bad price for 2....especially if one has to be totally hand scissored!

| I do both. Mine go every 6-8 weeks also for about $70-80, but we love our groomer and she does such a nice job, much better than my touch ups in between even though I have all of the equipment. Mine are clipped very short, so even with baths and trimming feet, ears, faces, nails... they still need to go. Right now they are looking scruffy and don't go for 2 more weeks! Here's the thing, I have done it myself. When we go to the groomer we are there from 9:00-11:00 and done. When I do it myself it literally takes half the day. Then I have to vacuum the bathroom and wipe down every surface because they get hair everywhere. When it's nice out I go out on the patio and do their feet, pads, faces, etc. but a full clip is messy and not an easy task. My best suggestion is to learn to trim them in between grooms so you can stretch out the time between appointments. That way you don't have to do everything, like anal glands, but you save some $$ and can spend time with your dogs! Don't get that peticure thing, its a gimmick. Just get nice nail scissors and clip a little bit at a time. You'll get the hang of it. The one piece of equipment the groomer has that I would LOVE to have is her dryer... that thing dries so fast and their hair is so straight. I love that dryer! It's like $400

| I do both mine, I figure if I can cut my skin boys hair then I should be doing them too. I have a little table, clippers straight and curved scissors and a pin brush. I use a flea comb for their beards. I still don't get them looking groomer beautiful but its a work in progress and i've saved money big time.

| Invest in good clippers now and you won't regret it. I've had my Oster A5 for nine years now. Petedge is great place to buy them. They come with a # blade. If you plan to use snap on combs, you'll also need a #40 to go under the combs. It's really not that hard to learn how to do it and with three dogs, you will save tons of money. |

| After having a bad grooming experience, I am learning how to do it myself. I got a $50.00 clipper set from PetSmart and a smaller one for the ears, and pads of his feet. I cut arund the eyes with a scissor and that takes me really long because of how careful I have to be. Theclipper I use cost me about $7.00. its the kind that you open and close, not the one you have to put the nail through the hole. I found that those are more difficult to use. |

| I have 3 Well Groomed Yorkies You have to visit PetEdge.com Wholesale prices on exclusive dog grooming and pet supplies they have everything you could possibly need to Groom your own Baby. They have wholesale prices and even sell all the Supplies to the Professional Groomers! I have 3 Yorkies w/full long coats that I have been growing since they were born w/the exception of Artie who accidently got "Shaved Down" for the Summer at Petco, while visiting my Mother in California. Ever since then and after I got my 2nd Yorkie I forced myself to learn how to Groom them myself! Not only does it save me $ but I have more control over how they look and I get all the compliments not the Groomer. If you have any Books on Yorkie's it will explain how to do it, some will even show you different Hair Styles. Their weekly routine consist of a Bath, blow dry, nail clipping, ear cleaning, both Abigail and Pom Pom have their bangs trimmed w/scissors since they don't want to wear a Topknot! Their Monthly routine is a Sanitary Shave (their private parts), Ears Shaved & Tipped, Feet & Eyes trimmed w/scissors (in between their pads). Daily grooming is a "Brush" at least twice a day, Teeth brushed, face & eyes wiped w/a wash cloth. I do it right before I leave the House so they know we are going "Bye Bye". I try to brush them as much as possible, maybe while I'm sitting around watching TV. so they are always relaxed and never anxious so it does'nt seem like I'm forcing them, they enjoy it! I do extra work on Artie since he has the longest hair, he has a Topknot and his Tail is Braided w/a matching bow every morning. This is also another way to BOND w/them just like "Walking" I think it makes you closer? If you mess up some how don't worry it will grow back, Good Luck! |
