| Just a quick question about AKC registration when we bought our puppy from a breeder, he said that he will send us AKC application once he gets a confirmation from our vet that our puppy was neutered so we did. on the website it says that this is a red flag (American Kennel Club - About Registration) and we were suppose to get an application right away when we purchased our doggy ????? we do have a signed contract by the seller, giving all of the identifying information and AKC number for our puppy, but no application??? if i call a breeder - can he give me the information i need over the phone (puppy number, etc) or i actually need an application to be mailed to me first? thanks |

| I have to admit that I have done the same thing with my babies. I am trying to do everything I can to protect them from puppy mills. Did you get the dog spayed/neutered? If so, then you should contact the breeder and tell him that you got it done and that you would like your papers. If he objects or refuses to give them, then I would say you have been scammed. If he agrees and sticks to his side of the contract, then you should not have any problems..You will need the application to properly register your dog as you will need alot of info off of it. Not just the puppy number.. |

| i did send to my breeder a confirmation that my puppy was neutered. and it was already a month ago:-( the dog was born on october 2nd (2007) - how much time do i have to register him with AKC? is there a certain time period to do so? i will follow up with a breeder. I have 3 pages contract from him :-( just looked it up - it says that i should neuter/spay puppy no later then "date" and seller agrees to promptly release the AKC limited registration application form. The buyer agrees to register this dog with AKC promptly upon receipt of the "blue slip" from the seller. hope its not too late:-( Last edited by watson; 08-06-2008 at 07:01 AM. |

| Well when I picked up my puppy from the breeder I didnt get my AKC application right away (but she told me that I wouldnt when she called me to come get her) because she hadnt recieved it yet in the mail herself but she did give me a reciept from AKC showing that she paid for it and her dogs info, etc. I was ok with that because for some reason I really trusted her afterall I sent her my deposit without even seeing the pup. About two weeks later I contacted her and she helped me register my pup online at the AKC website which she said is alot faster but that was only because she had purchased a pin # to do this when she had registered the litter. Have you contacted your breeder recently?? |

| i'm going to call this evening, but wanted some heads up before i call. someone told me that i only have 1 year to register puppy from the day he was born - is this correct? i do have my puppy's AKC # and his parents info with their AKC#, but got a little bit worried about that red flag tip :-) on AKC website. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't think this would be a red flag in your case, it's different with limited registration. There are still plenty of bad AKC breeders that sell pups with full registration, no questions asked. These are the same ones who often don't come up with any papers. When a breeder is selling with limited registration, they expect you to offer proof of neutering before you get the final papers. You can register your dog at any time in his life; it's just less expensive the first year. I don't think you need to be worried, in fact it sounds like your breeder is one who cares what happens to the puppies she places.

| Registration from AKC website: Online Dog Registration (New Puppy Owner) I. Registering Your New Puppy Online The New Puppy Owner link enables you to register your new puppy by using the PIN provided on your Dog Registration Application. If your application does not have a PIN, your application must be completed and mailed to the AKC. The information needed to register your puppy online includes: Puppy Number Dog Registration PIN Names and addresses of all owners Name of the puppy Transfer date Gender Color Markings (if any) Your Registration Package selection Form of Payment (The AKC accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.) NOTE: A late fee of $35.00 is charged if the registration application is submitted 1 year after the issue date of the litter registration and $65.00 if the registration occurs 2 years after the litter registration issue date. | you can register him/her at anytime after a year (I think) you have to pay a little extra. You can register online if you have the puppies information, because on the new applications it gives that option Why didnt the breeder just give you a limited registration?? thats kind of weird. Limited prevent you from being able to use him for breeding or showing

| You can register them after a year, there is just a late fee applied after a certain date has passed. If you are worried about the breeder keeping their word, you can contact AKC and if you have the registration number for the dam they can check to see if the breeder has litters registered with them. I did that when I got my puppy because I was putting a deposit on her w/o seeing her first and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't walking into a scam. AKC emailed me back confirming that there was a litter registered with her.

| Breeders holding the registration papers until proof of s/n is a pretty common practice these days. If you have a contract stating that this was the agreement, then you should be well protected. You can't register the dog just by having the dam and sire's AKC numbers. I wouldn't view this as a red flag (yet). In many cases not being given the paperwork when you get the pup could mean trouble, but I wouldn't think that the breeder would specify the agreement in a contract if that were the case. |

| I agree that if the breeder has a contract stating the fact, I wouldn't worry, it's the scamers who don't have these things in writing that I would worry about. If I'm correct it's 1 yr. from the time the breeders reg. the litter or dog and not how long you have had the dog. I'll check and make sure.

| Fee Schedule yep it's one year after breeder reg litter or dog you are talking about and not how long you have had the dog. So you will need to ask that question.
