Senior Yorkie Talker | Face color changing Hi, I'm new to YT and to owning Yorkies, but I have owned a Jack Russell/Miniature Pinscher mix for 4 years. So I understand the "go get 'em" attitude of terriers and we're all adjusting to each other well. The breeder I bought Gwen from let me bring her home when she was almost 6 weeks old, I know that was really really early but the breeder was pretty insistent she was ready (in hindsight I think it was a puppy mill operation but I've learned my lesson there and won't hesitate when we buy a male to be more adamant on my questionings) but she is thriving in our house and eats good, generally goes on her potty pad (she seems to prefer the outdoors and seems to be "holding it" longer now) she is currently 12 1/2 weeks old weighs 3 pounds 10 ounces (she was 1 pound 12 ounces when she came home). I have a few questions. I've read bunches of Yorkie books and visited countless websites looking for these answers to no avail, hopefully someone can shed some light on the subjects.... 1. My other dogs never changed colors as their breeds stay what they are. I know her face should turn gold but I was wondering when that generally starts occurring, she is more silver on her face than when she came home...is that how it starts? About how old are they when their face should be changed? 2. The breeder did let me see the parents but she had shaved the dam completely bald for the summer, not a puppy cut, think 1/4-1/2 inch all over including face. The breeder swears that the dam is a silky coat and the sire is a soft coat. When will she be old enough for me to tell what she will be? When her hair is wet it will part and it is growing pretty quickly I think. But I don't know how she'll turn out. Is it general practice to breed to silky to soft? 3. Anyone have any ideas on how to make her quit trying to eat the comb and brush everyday when I work on her coat? If there are treats involved all she does is try to get at them and that's not conducive to me grooming her. 4. I've had very bad experiences w/ black nailed dogs and clippers so I have an Oster nail grinder (like the groomers at PetSmart use) and she freaks out when it touches her nails. Any ideas on how to make her enjoy her grooming sessions more? Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

| Love your babies name, Gwen. How cool. Hurry and learn to post pictures...we love pictures here!! I love the guessing game on what Gracie will look like when she's all done. I'm excited to see what she's going to look like all grown up, but also, not wanting her to get there too quickly. I'm loving the puppy stage! I got Gracie when she was 12 weeks old and her puppy coat matted daily. At first she too would try to eat the comb, my hand, her foot, my chin, anything she could reach. I would break up the grooming into several short sessions each night to try and keep it on a positive note. Also gave her a small bite of a treat every minute or so. I kept the treat out of sight otherwise. G is very treat motivated and would also fixate on it if she could see it. She is 6 months old now and is much better about the grooming. She still, somewhat, chews the comb, but mostly she just licks my hand if she starts to get too stressed. I watch for her cues and take a break if she needs it. Also, still lots of treats, praise and play during the sessions to help. So just be patient, calm and don't quite, most of the issue is her age, it will get better. I can't help with the nails, tho. I'm too big a chicken to even try doing them. I take her to the groomers and have them clip 'em. For me, it's worth the money to not have to stress about quicking her. 1) Gracie at 3 months old 2) Gracie at 6 months old

| Welcome to YT! Sophie is a little over a year and a half old and her head is finally gold. I call it gold because it also looks a little blonde. Her hair on her head looked gray/white for a while. I'd say she was atleast a year old before her gray started turning. My mom helps me cut her nails. She has really sharp high quality nail clippers and Sophie doesn't flinch. I tried using something I bought at Walmart and it tore her nails and freaked her out. I also tried the grinder and she would have none of that. I had to sell it. I heard a great tip about grooming her on YT. Give her her own comb to play with while you comb her. As far as the coat is concerned you'll probably just have to wait and see. Have fun with Gwen! |

| Abby started turning silver at about 4-5 months old and at 6 months now, she's almost completely blonde/gold on top of her head. Her face is kind of a deep reddish gold. I'm really glad that the silver turned so quickly. There's a tool called a peticure that everyone on here seems to love for doing nails. Check it out. I've seen it advertised on TV as well. All the best with Gwen.

| Hi! Welcome to YT! My yorkie puppy is 16weeks old this week and his head is silver and gray- which started to be really noticable about 2 weeks ago. When his coat parts, you can see some of the blue/silver coming out at the roots. He still has his puppy coat which is soft, but kind of crinkly- kind of like a perm gone wrong ! I heard that once you shave off the puppy coat, it will grow back silky... so I am waiting until he gets his last set of vaccination next week, and then its off to the groomer to get a buzz cut! As for the toe nails, I was freaked out cutting is nails b/c I didn't know where his quick was so when I took him to the vet, the vet tech demonstrated a nail trimming for me. It was really helpful. Good luck!!! |
