| yorkies and children Thanku all! am feeling welcome alreadystill trying to get the hang of this forum businessi know that each dog is an individual, but as a breed what are yorkies like with children? i have two little girls, a four year old and a one year old and wasnt sure whether it would be better to wait until they are a little older before getting a puppy. they are both very gentle with the dogs of families and friends and of course i wouldnt leave them with a puppy unattended. any advice would be appreciated. xxx |

| Hi and welcome to YT! I say go for it! I have a Yorkie that I bought when my daughter was 7. She did just fine with him. I think a lot depends on the kids. Being the mom you know how your kids will react to a puppy. You know if they are rough or gentle. If your children are gentle then I don't see a problem. Yorkies are very delicate but I think that with proper supervision it can be done. Diesel loves my daughter. He is always the first one to greet her in the mornings! When I leave the house she is the one that he goes to. It is almost like we have a pecking order. I come first then my daughter, and when all else fails he goes to my hubby. LOL I hope things work out for you.

| I have a little yorkie about 4 lbs. I got her a 7 months when my son was 9 months. I was extremely nervous when he started to walk because I thought he would crush her when he fell down. Well, no problems yet. My son is two now. My children were raised with dogs and are very respectful with animals. I hope that helps. feel free to pm me with any questions.

| If you are sure your children won't hurt the puupy, then I'm sure a puppy would be a great addition. But I had rescued Jake from a family who had a baby who was 1.5 and she held him by the neck, like a doll. So they rehomed him to me. Most breeders will refuse to sell a puppy if you have small children, but of course that depends ont he breeder. My breeder told me she won't give her puppies to a home with little children. It's going to be VERY hard work paying attention to two small children and a very naughty puppy! I think you should wait a few years, or at least when you are very sure your kids won't get rough. But babies and toddlers are as unpredictable as puppies! Good luck!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Many breeders won't sell to people with children because your children might be fine, but how about your children's friends? Joey hasn't been around many kids, and because kids tend to make quick jerky movements he feels threatened when he sees them, and barks. Kids don't always seem to be as careful as adults where they're walking, and I think if I had children, and wanted a Yorkie, I would look for one of the larger ones. Welcome to YorkieTalk!

| Lucia, Welcome to YorkieTalk You have asked a hard question to answer. I don't think there is a yes/no answer. We have many families here at YT with both small children and yorkies that are model Yorkie owners. For me, I decided to wait until my children were a bit older - they were all in jr. high before our first, LacieBug came into our lives. You are doing a good thing by researching prior to adding a furbaby to your home. Good luck to you! Try pming some of the members with young children to get some more detailed info about the pros and cons. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I have twin four year olds and they are just fine with my 4 1/2 lbs little one. They were raised around our other little ones too. As long as your kids respect the size and actions and space of a puppy/dog then you should be fine. I say go for it. Nothing like the present! |

| They're such great dogs; so lovable. My 15-year-old son has really bonded with my Molly. I agree that if you do get a yorkie, that it be on the bigger size. The breeders tend to know approx. how much the pup will weigh. I know the breeder for Lexie said if I wanted a small yorkie, Lexie was not going to be small. I wanted a larger yorkie so she would be a little more "sturdy". She's certainly sturdy and lots of fun. If I had small children, I think she would do great with them. But then again, she weighs 15 lbs. She's very gentle with the 2 little yorkies I have, Glory B 3.5 lbs, and Molly 4.5 lbs. Good luck in your decision.

| Yorkie's tend to be very delicate little dogs, especially as puppies. My Suzi is so much like a toddler that it is a lot of work! If your little children are calm then it would be easier on your family to have a small dog. However, most 4 yr. olds are busy, little people who can't understand why they could not handle a puppy like a stuffed animal. You might want to consider a rescue Yorkie that is already full grown and calmer for your kids. Some Yorkies are bigger and more robust the others too.

| i totally take on board your point about 4 year old being 'busy little people' and an older dog is certainly a very good idea so i will look into that. i certainly wont be rushing into anything as, of course, the welfare of both animal and children is paramount xxx |
