| Anyone know how to get a TICK head out of a Yorkie ? ..PICS FROM LOCH NESS ! Maybe I should be posting this in the sick injured thread, but Corky's not really sick or injured...just TICK-IFIED !!! .....Flamin' ticks ! Went to Loch Ness the other day which is just along the road from my house here in the TICK filled Highlands of Scotland, and 2 of my 4 babies got horrible ticks...not the small black ones, but the large red and brown ones ! I got Tammy's off, but Corky's broke at the head ! Anyone know anything that'll get it out...? ......the skin closes over it and it's so deep...have tried to gouge it out with a needle which hurt him a bit, but he was very good...also tried tweezers, but it is well hooked at the top of his leg ! I put antiseptic on it, but if I leave it, it is going to get infected and will be burried in there when the skin heals. Also can anyone tell me if anything else will happen if I leave it in there ? Thanks Debra x x x Here are my pics of out day out on Tuesday....sorry no NESSIE that day lol !!! Last edited by HighlandYorkies; 07-25-2008 at 02:17 PM. |

| Hints on how to remove a tick. .Really Good! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A friend sent me this and said it really worked! I don't want to get a tick to try it out though.. hehe To Remove the entire TICK safely.......... Tick Removal Please forward to anyone with children .... or hunters, etc!! thanks! A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!! I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc. Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, 'It worked!' Please pass on; everyone needs this helpful hint. __________________

| I think I'd be off to the vet just to make sure everything is all right - and take what's left of the headless tick with you to show him. You can't be too careful. I love the pics - that's one place I've always wanted to visit.

| Go to a vet for a tick ? I think they would laugh at me.....but if I can't get the pesky thing out I might just have to resort to that ! Thanks for the soap tip Brenda...but it's too late...it's just the hooks part of the head left...I think I am going to have to have another bash at the needle...poor baby...I hate gouging into him....he was soo good too ! Yes, Loch Ness is lovely...but full of ticks boohoo unless you stay on the beach ! THANKS EVERYONE ! |

To HighlandYorkies. I thought it was dangerous to leave a tick head in. That is what I have heard for years. If you can't get it out, it may be a good idea to at least call your vet to see what he says about it. I can't imagine one of mine sitting still while I try to dig out a tick. Good luck in getting it out.

| Yuck! I just found this info: This skin irritation is due to the irritating and destructive tick saliva. It is not due to the tick losing its head, literally. Do not be worried about the tick head staying in; it rarely happens. This skin irritation is due to a reaction to the tick saliva. I believed this to be true but didn't want to toss facts without checking first.

| I've been curious about this: If your yorkie has all his/her vaccinations and takes anti-parasite medications (topical and oral), what are the primary dangers of getting a tick? Also, why does it matter if you remove the entire tick (i.e. you accidentally leave the head attached)? When I was a kid, my grandparents had several dogs on their farm that always had plenty of ticks and they never had any health-related problems. I know that a case study such as that means nothing but... I've just never seen people so concerned about ticks as individuals are here. |

| A good way to remove a tick, if it's still whole, is to dab it with some nail polish remover on a cotton bud. This makes it shrivel & release it's hold. xx Meggie |

| hi there, not sure now the head is left in but u could put a good dollop of vaseline on the tick, if its whole and they fall off cause they cant brethe may take an hour or so. We used to have a tick remover, it looked like a diamond shaped piece of wire on a plastic handle, u put it over the tick and gave a twist and hey presto tick removed, im sure any good pet center/garden center would stock them for future use. |

| Over here, across the pond, some of our ticks carry Lymes Disease that why we want to head for the vet if we can't get the creature off. If you don't have Lymes there just keep it clean and watch it.
