| bath time trauma My 8yr old responds so traumatically during and after bath that I am going to call the dog whisper and see if he can figure it out....then of course my 6yr old who is much better with bath time joins him in acting like something is radically wrong. Bath time lasts a total of approx 10 min from doing the ears to a final rinse all this is done in the kitchen sink and using the sink hose for wetting down and rinsing.....I just don't get it Tina

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Bathtime Drama I had a rough time with Aiden at first, but he's now only 5 mo old. Now he's so used to it,he's much better. It's by far his favorite thing ,but he's better now. I'm surprised yours isn't used to it by now. I also witched to the tub, sink too small. He's alot calmer in the tub.

| I used to take him in the shower with me...so I am wondering if it is the metal sink that scares him.. One thing I am going to try first is getting a rubber sink mat to see if that makes him feel better. He really goes thru quite a bit of trembling...yesterday I actually put a harness and leash on him and took him out while he was soaked with water and not fully rinsed off about 3min after he was in the sink, to see if he had to pee...he did not but wanted to go for a walk. I had to re shampoo him to finish his grooming. When I used to take him in the shower...I didn't have a sink hose in those days ....I used to hold him in my arms while I was rinsing him..but I feel that the shower water is harder on him than the sink hose. He never wa really crazy about the bath time but he never reacted this way. Now it takes him a good 10min to calm down.....he won't even take a treat till he is calm and of course rubs his head in my sheets (which I allow him to do). I really would like the dog whisperer to see this Tina

| The first time I had him groomed he was probably around 1 yr he was washed by a groomer assistant with out me watching (this groomer was used by many people in my town)....but I am now wondering how difficult that grooming was for him....he was not happy when we got in to the car but I was not that tuned into watching that something might not be ok with him as far as that place went. He was not cut or anything and I was there for 90% of the time just not when he was being washed and the tubs are out of view. I have not let anyone bathe him except for me since. It maybe just that he is not used to the sink and it is metal not ceramic like the shower. So I will have to do some research. Tina

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I use a plastic dishpan inside the sink, and I think this helps Joey feel more stable, I just pick him up and dump the water out as needed, but the rubber mat might work. I think one of the biggest mistakes made when bathing dogs is that the water is too hot. Most people test the water with their hands and hands can take much higher temperatures than the rest of the body. Test with your forearm, and always error on the side of coolness. Dogs are much more sensitive to heat than humans, this is especially true of puppies, and the water should only be lukewarm.

| Hi Nancy...... Yes, I always check the water with my arm...I usually use warm with him cause he always looks like he is shivering....but never hot....but I will try to cool it a little more but not cold. I am hoping that the rubber mat works if not I will have to try something else. Tina

| Have you tried "wearing out" your pup first? Bella did not like bath time, but then I read/heard to play with them till they are tired and then bathe them. This has helped bath time go a little bit smoother and not soo bad.

| that is something I have not tried....he loves tug-o-war so maybe I can do that before I bathe him. Also it was probably not a good idea to bathe him at noon before his vet appointment.....I walked him and GiGi about 10min after their bath but usually I don't get them ready to go any where afterward. Not that it was a prob by the time they calmed down they were ready for anything. But maybe it is better to bathe them at night rather than during the day. They usually still go thru that trauma sttuff even in the evening but they would have more play time afterward...can't figue but I'll try to paly with him before hand...I am sure he will figure it out eventually but maybe not. Tina

| I would feel so bad if he was traumatized after his first groomer session. He was so young and I left him on his own for a short time. And now reliving the whole thing. I could go back and punch that guy...actually it was the groomer son who bathed him and he even said afterwards that he is not experienced...but being the dope that I am I never connected an experience that would scar him. I am very cautious with who I take both of them to..vets, groomers and anyone else. They are never out of my sight unless it is an emergency...and this is for many years now. I guess something about that vet appointment didn't instill too much trust in me either....sometimes instinct is just there. Tina

| I found my Yorkie Arnold hated bathing in the sink too, but when I bathed him in the bath or shower he was ok. Katie and Suzi will be bathed in the shower. Hugs Shirl x x |

| bath time I give them a treat when they hop in the sink, and sit... I put warm water on them and talk to them all the time... I do not let the water get down into their nose and they seem to take comfort in me holding up those little snouts. Everytime they do exactly what I want I give a little taste of something... If they try to jump...I give the stop or quit command and hold them until they quit the action...I do this as I talk calmly and let them see that MOma does nothing to hurt them... My voice and my actions are fluid...this works with my horse as well... I reward good behavior and scold bad. Consistency is so important... If one is afraid of the clippers... I let them run until they get use to the nose, before I clip their ear... but the main thing is a routine and stay consistent if I can.... I try to build a trust daily with them... hugs kisses... but I do it in a form of play...it helps... hope a tip in here will help...
