I use a plastic dishpan inside the sink, and I think this helps Joey feel more stable, I just pick him up and dump the water out as needed, but the rubber mat might work. I think one of the biggest mistakes made when bathing dogs is that the water is too hot. Most people test the water with their hands and hands can take much higher temperatures than the rest of the body. Test with your forearm, and always error on the side of coolness. Dogs are much more sensitive to heat than humans, this is especially true of puppies, and the water should only be lukewarm.
