| Safest way to buy a puppy online Hey everyone, I was wondering if any one has had experience purchasing a pup through craigslist or some other classified sites? I recently found a yorkie I'd like to adopt on hoobly.com, but the owner is in Florida (I'm in NY) and she says she'll ship it to me. However, I'm very iffy about the whole situation because there's really no way to know if she will just keep the money after I send it to her and I'll be out on several hundred and a yorkie. So I wanted to know what is the safest way to make a transaction like this? If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The safest way is not to do it. The Humane Society recommends that people stop buying from Pet Stores and Web Sites, most Websites are fronts for puppy mills, and every time you buy a puppy you are condoning dogs to live in horrible conditions. Always meet your breeder in person, and see the conditions in which the puppies are parents are raised. If you ignore all my other advise, please be very wary of anyone who wants you to wire money this is ALWAYS a scam, and you will have no recourse. Have you thought of a rescue? The YTCA has breeder referrals and some of the breeders have rescues. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club Btw, how much is this dog, several hundred makes me suspicious it's a scam.

| If you are going to buy online from somewhere like Craigslist, wait and do it locally. That way you can check out the dog and do a transaction in person. We just bougth a Yorkie off of Craigslist. She wasn't quite like she described her, but she is the sweetest thing. Ask alot of questions and hopefully they will be truthful with you. Our seller was a little less than truthful, but as we neared the transaction she did come clean on a few things. I have never seen a dog not miss their previous owner in the least, so I feel like I rescued her from people who didn't have enough time to spend with her. She is of course from a puppymill originally, but even they deserve a good life. You may be taking on someone elses problems. If you have time and love to spend, you can make a difference!

| breeders.net I found several breeders close to home by going to breeders.net then i did my home work. there you can put in the breed you want then a zip code. a list of breeders will come up. From there you can pretty much tell which ones are lagit. most will state that they wont ship. some say they sell as pets only and will want a spay neuter contrac. Like it has ben said before no your breeder see where they come from living conditions, Parents ect. Breeders.net Good luck. |

| Please be careful with buying a pet online. Many, including myself, have had not so pleasant experiences. The lady I purchased my baby from pretended to be a breeder and knew all the right things to say...She had answers to all of my questions, and I felt like she answered them right. Well, Miko was a very sick puppy. When we got him he had coccidia, a heart murmur, luxating patellas, hypoglycemia, a severe case of coccidia, and we later found out that he also had liver disease...My poor baby has been through a lot, but I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. We found out a couple of months later that this woman was actually a broker for puppymills!!! I am glad that you are asking questions about how to do it the right way... I would suggest going to the YTCA website and looking for breeders in your state. From there, you can look at websites, if they have one, or call them to find out more info about them. By talking to them, you should be able to narrow it down a bit. Good luck!!

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I think if you do buy online it is important to check into the breeder. I just got my Biewer Spanky online and I got references, talked to the breeder, checked with AKC and BBB. I talked to the vet that handles the litters verified all information first. I got a copy of the German register papers and confirmed them. I got a health garentee and medical records. I took him to our vet and had over three hundred dollars of testing done to verify he was healthy. I took no chances. He passed with flying colors. I got my little girl locally and did two home visits prior to getting her. You reallt do need to bve careful.

| Isn't it ok to get a pup through a breeder on YT even if they aren't in your own state?

| Always do your homework before you buy from ANYONE. Not referring to any particular case but I have seen a few threads where the breeder was made out to be the perfect and it turns out their breeding practices were anything but. It is good to take in references from everyone but it is still important to do your research one anyone you are considering. As far as purchasing out of your area, you can spend a little extra and fly out there. It may cost a little more but at least you won't be buying a pup sight unseen.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | As a breeder, I have met many folks on line, through this forum and Yahoo groups. I ask lots of questions, check references, google everyone, reverse directory addresses and phone numbers. I call vets, the humane society, the rescues, animal controls in your home town. I send friends to do home visits. This needs to go both ways. A good breeder will have you to their home, will spend hours with you on the phone, emails, and faxes. Paypal has protection for both buyers and sellers. Another protection is posting the breeders name and kennel and asking if anyone has had any experience with the breeder. Ask for pictures with the newspaper date visible is one way to avoid a scam. The best would be to meet the seller at the airport. |

| I bought all of my three thru classified ads on the internet, but they were all in my area where I could go in person and check things out. Having said that, I would never purchase anything, let alone an animal sight unseen. There are just too many unscrupled individuals out there. Good luck in your search for that perfect lifelong friend.

| I recently inquired about a puppy on Craigslist and it was obviously a scam (they wanted me to send them money first, etc). I then posted a 'Beware of Yorkie Scam' ad and Craigslist banned my post!!! I have done a LOT of surfing and it IS scary. Finding this website was a Godsend..I don't have access to many breeders in Alaska and I can't travel all over the country in search of the right dog. I found Deb of Amazing Yorkies here and she is wonderful. I found nothing but positive comments about her here (this is a very active forum so that says a lot). I think if you are cautious and do enough research you can find a great new pet on the internet. |

| I have sold puppies online and bought puppies online also. I do talk a LOT to the person before hand - I would do so on the phone and not just through emails. I actually just sold my baby girl Lexie and she went home today! I was in contact the WHOLE time with her new Mommy as she was flying to her. If you are afraid the dog isn't "real" you could always ask to have the pup photographed in front of a certain object. Something that everyone would have in their home. If they can't do it..then they might not have that pup to be able to do so. We have bought puppies and I have to say the only time I was ever unhappy was when I bought a dog from overseas. I knew things were not going to go well when communications didn't go well, but at that time I had already sent a deposit. With us shipping the puppy today...the lady sent her money for her baby girl. I gave her our vet's phone number and put her on the ok that she talk to them list if she wanted to verify the exam time and date. Then I scheduled the flight and gave her the confirmation number for that flight so she could even call to verify if she wanted. Then today we went to take her for her flight. I called the moment I had her airbill number so she could track her online and to verify the time the flight was scheduled to land. Then I sent her a photo of the pup I took on the way to the airport. It was a fast flight and she called me the moment she got her. She LOVED her and said she was beautiful (exactly what I wanted to hear LOL) and her tail was wagging the moment she opened the crate. Today was a wonderful day Of course we spoke all of the time during this and leading up to the flight!!

| Many people have already given you very good, sound advice. I personally would only buy from a breeder that I could meet locally, and ask all the questions that I wanted to . I just feel like it is too much of a risk to buy online, and not to see the puppy beforehand. Or the parents, and breeder. Before getting my first Yorkie i did look at internet sites, and shipping. However, it was not for me . I got a pup that I could meet the breeder and drive to her house. I found out later though, that she had other puppies from other breeds She lived out of the middle of know where, it made me mad to have found that out She did tell me that it was her first litter of Yorkie pups. It is very hard to find people who you can trust, and tell you right.
