| My gate was wide open!!!! I dont know who is doing it but quite often(at least once or twice a month) I will come home and my gate will be open. It is really pissing me off because one of these days I will lose one of my dogs because I will let them out not knowing my gate is open. It almost happened before but I found my dog several streets away in the neighborhood . I normally just let all 3 into the backyard by themselves for about 5- 15 minutes to potty. Well thats enough time for one of them to bolt out of the yard. And whos to say a dog wont come into my yard? I dont know if neighbors are doing it or if some meter-reading person is coming into my backyard but I am ticked. I am going to put a beware of dog sign up and a pad lock. Are the water meter people allowed to just enter your backyard whenever? Isnt this trespassing?

| It really ticks me off when people come in my gate and leave it open also. Its just common courteousy to shut it.

| My stupid neighbors grandkids play on the top of their shed(weird huh?) which is right up against my fence and thier stupid toys are always rolling off the shed into my yard. So I thought maybe they are doing it. I know we have some type of meter in are backyard so that was my other guess. I dont leave chloe out for more than about 5 minutes unless I am out there and she really doesnt venture past the patio so I am really worried about my adventurous boxer. She has gotten out once before thanks to the dang cable guy.

| I would call any utility companies that require access to your back yard to read meters (electric/water/gas) and inquire if your meter was read today. I would then leave specific directions that the gate be closed and request them to specifically record your request. I did have a problem once. I cured it. Never happened ever again. I hope you have the same good luck. You must provide access for utility readers.

| I used to have this same problem and it was the meter reader. I ended up putting a pad lock on my gate. When they come to read the meter and I am not home they usually left me some little notice thingy. I finally got fed up with that too and called. I told them that they would have to work around my schedule as I am not going to come home just to have the meter read. The lady got nasty with me on the phone when I told her that so I told them to come out and move the meter to the front of the house. They did. ALso, I wanted to let you know to NOT put a beware of dog sign on your fence because if something were to happen like the nieghbor kids accidently got knocked over by a happy boxer they could sue the crap out of you. One of my very close friends had this happen to him. He had an english bulldog and put up a sign to deter people from using his back door since EBs were pretty rare in this area. One of his nieghbors kids accidently threw the ball into his yard and went to get it without permission from my friend and the bulldog was happy to see the kid. The kid TRIPPED over the dog, my friend saw it happen from his window and the parents ended up sueing my friend. Also if something were to happen and one of your dogs bit some one, they could come back on you and say that you knew that your dog was mean because you have a Beware of Dog sign. Just letting you know. Try the pad lock though. |

| I suggest getting a lock for your gate and put a sign up that you have dogs. Meter readers can go in the backyard and won't if you have it locked and have the sign up. They will call to schedule a time to come.

| I agree, get a lock asap! I almost lost my dog a long time ago due to someone leaving my gate open (and i had one of those beware of the dogs sign).. People can be very ignorant so i hope you get a lock and i hope it doesn't happen again. best wishes. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Here in our area if the meter reading people can not access a meter located in your back yard because it's locked or even if it's not and you have a dog inside (they won't come in then either).....any way, they will estimate your reading (on the high side, I might add) UNTIL you get them access into the yard.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | thought of something else Regarding being sued over injuries caused by a dog. Last summer a child threw a ball over a privacy fence, climbed over, and then fell ON the dog. The dog bite the child, duh. Any way the kid's parents sued, won, and the family was forced to either give the dog away or have it destroyed. Now I don't want anyone bitten, but for God's sake the dog was in HIS backyard.....the kid was trespassing. Btw, the dog moved into OUR neighborhood.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | The meter readers in Houston make a montly or bi-monthly visit to my yard (though I think they GUESSED after the last bill I got) You SHOULD complain if yours are not closing the gate - I have a sign on mine and they close it every time - If they ever left it open I'd be on the phone REALLY FAST. They should enter and leave in the same way your gate was presented to them. If it's closed - they should leave it closed - I would call your electric company and give them the business !l |

| I kind of have the same problem but mine was from my teen & his friends not taking the time or effort to close the gate properly. After repeatedly getting onto them about this and reminding them to check the gate I decided the easiest solution was for me to walk over and check the gate each time I let the dogs.

| [QUOTE=red98vett]The meter readers in Houston make a montly or bi-monthly visit to my yard (though I think they GUESSED after the last bill I got) oh my goodness i think its a houston thing the last bill i got was 345.00 i dont even want to turn my lights on the bill is so high. anyway i would also go with the lock thing i know kids from my neighborhood like to go into my back yard without me knowing so they can see if my pool is clean so they can ask if they can swim. darn kids. its not a public pool. i didnt even know it was happening until my neighbor rang the door bell and brought paris to me cause she was at his house. good thing he was outside.. i asked how she got out he said the kids were in the back yard AGAIN. of corse i was confused and asked what kids and he explained what was going on, apparently they did this to the previous owner and thought that they could do the same to me. well the next time they came to my house i was ready and their parents were so sorry that they werent keeping an eye on their kids. i threathed to call the cops and press charges. im so glad thats over. i just ended up putting a lock.
