| ![]() i think the best thing to do would be to start off by finding a reputable breeder in your area to mentor you. learn all you can, help out, and get some real experience before going into this on your own. this can be a very expensive as well.. so keep that in mind. as well as time consuming. are you in school? work? ive learned that breeding is definately a family experience... you arent the only breeder... EVERYONE in the house ends up playing a part in it. that being said. i dont think i would buy from a 17 year old breeding on their own, however.... if it were a 17 year old breeding along with an established mentor, or with a recomendation of a breeder that had been working with them... then i MAY consider it after lots of questions were asked.

Donating YT Addict | ![]() Amour Yorkies I think it is great that you want to be a responsible breeder. Personally I wouldn't buy a puppy from you YET. Seeing the offspring's temperments and being able to speak to references who bought puppies in the past is important to me. I also prefer to buy from a breeder that actively shows their dogs and is a member of the local breeder's association is important. I know that they are very knowledgable about what to look for in the breed standard. That being said I don't think your age is the issue, if you plan on doing the proper testing and have a mentor that is going to be actively involved with your breeding program, in a few years I think that I would consider looking at your pups ![]()

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | ![]() I don't think age matters as much as research and a genuine love for the breed. From reading your posts, I definetly think you sound responsible enough. Is your mother going to be helping you at all? That might make a weary person more comfortable. While experience is good, everyone has to start somewhere - you've gotta start small. Best of luck.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() Although you've said that you researched the subject thoroughly, I feel like you probably haven't even scratched the surface. For example, you seem to think the major trait to be breeding for is small size, this is just one of many traits, and I believe it's the least important and the most detrimental to the breed. I suggest you start by attending dog shows if you haven't already, and like the others have suggested, find a mentor. The biggest mistake you can make is to feel like you have done all the research necessary. You will learn that breeding yorkies the right way isn't a great money making opportunity, in fact many breeders are lucky to break even. A good breeder breeds because he truly desires to improve the breed. There should be no other reason for breeding.

| ![]() My first questions to a breeder would be: how long have you OWNED Yorkies, as I think first hand experience with a particular breed cannot be learned by book or the internet. My first questions to a 17 year old would be: what are your education and career goals? |

| ![]() I am also intersted as to why you chose the Yorkie breed inparticular? What your goals are as a breeder, and if your aware that very tiny Yorkies can have more health problems? AND if you have had enough experience with the breed or just intersted in making puppies to sell? What would you do if the mother dog got into trouble during labor? The moms generally have small litters, and sometimes require have C-sections .It is an enormous responsibilty that should not be taken lightly for anyone, regardless of age. I am thinking that once the novelty wears off that you will more interested in dating, and your education, rather then devoting ALL of your time with breeding. ![]() |
