| Please help!!Should I get a puppy with known MVD I've had a depsit on a new puppy for a few weeks. The breeder took her in Friday fo BAT. Her numbers were 36 and26. Her father has asymtomatic MVD. He is 7 and has never had any problems. Not on any treatment all. He is now part of the Cornell study on Shunt disease. The breeder is going to let me have her for almost nothing just to give her a good home. Right now she is healthy and active. I'm not sure what to do. We also have a 6 month male who will be neutered tomorrow. I lost my 7 yr old yorkie 3 weeks ago to renal disease and it was pretty traumatic for me to lose him. THis scares me about the new dog, but she needs a home and we would like to give it to her and hold our breath and see what happens. What do you all think? |

| I think it's wonderful that you're considering still taking this baby in to your home. How old is the puppy? It's always a real possibility that a dog with asymptomatic MVD may indeed become symptomatic. MVD indicates an abnormality in the liver and over time, more damage may occur. Would you be willing to put the money into supplements and things that the dog might need? Have you ever considered that the pup might not actually have MVD? How old was he when the test was done and had he had any shots or meds within the time frame that he had the BAT?

| I say go for it as long as you don't mind feeding a special diet and paying for supplements if they are necessary. Those numbers do indicate MVD but it is always possible (though highly unlikely) that it could be a shunt, so that might get expensive and stressful. Also, it is best for dogs with MVD to be fed at least 3-4 times a day. Why was the dad bred to begin with?

| She had the test done on Friday at 15 weeks. Her sister didn't test positive for it. Her dad wasn't diagnosed until last year and he's 7 so he has had NO symptoms at all and his numbers are 100. He is as healthy as horse, and so is Lucy right now. She has tons of energy, eats right and is a good size. Yes, we have considered everything and it scares me to death, especially after what we went through with Scooter, but we love her. I'm not familiar with this disease except for what I've read ont the internet. It doesn't sound too bad as long as they stay asymptomatic. |

| It was an "accident". The breeder took him out of his cage and within 5 mins. it was over. She even had the puppies DNA'd to make sure they belonged to the dad. The breeder is really a great person. She has not hidden any of this from us and has been up front all along. |

| I highly suggest that you join the liver shunt and mvd group on yahoo groups. You can learn all about MVD (symptomatic and asymptomatic). You can read about the special consideration that needs to be taken when dealing with these dogs such as type of foods that you should probably avoid and things like that.

| I did join that yesterday. I talked to a vet also. I'm aware of the low protein diet, supplements and also future meds. The breeder is also going through all of this with the dad. Like I said before, she is even participating in the Cornell Study on liver shunt disease. I'm willling to do it all, i just don't want to have my heart broken if she were to become really, really ill soon. That's my biggest concern. |

| It sounds as though you are already emotionally attached somewhat to "Lucy" I certainly can understand the heart and desire to give the little one a loving home. It sounds as though you are well informed of potential difficulties in the future and as long as you are prepared for them I say go for it. Warm regards,

| With proper diet (vegetarian formulas) and supplements, your baby should live a long life if indeed she does have asymptomatic MVD. Prayers to you, your famly, and the new baby I think it's wonderful that you're going to take her!!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My 3 year old Cali has very mild MVD. BA scores like 93 and 43 and has had no problems and is on no meds or diet although I watch her protein intake. If you feel emotionally and financially able to care for her should she get sick then that's great. Hopefully she will remain healthy.

| Well, we got her this afternoon. She has bonded to our other yorkie puppy so well. You would think they have been together forever. I'm not going to think on the negative, just the positive. She is adorable! Thanks for all of the great advice!! |

| Congratulations on your new puppy. Kudos for going into it with eyes wide open. A baby has a loving home. I have a rescue Pommie who isn't even a yr. old yet and needs knee surgery. I am so glad that I have him because I know that he will get the best care possible. I love him. Kisses to your furbabies.

| what a great breeder to be honest!!!!!! That is GREAT that your breeder was honest! Good for her!!!! She was that upfront with you and did the necessary precaution of testing the others. Those are the kind of breeders we need. My dog never showed any signs of LS (that I was aware of but now I wonder about a few things) but developed stones at 1 1/2 years old. We are having bladder issues but he eats and has bounds of energy. I stay strict with his diet and supplements and work closly with a few vets. thousands and thousands of dollars later...but he is worth it. He was diagnosed with multiple external congenital liver shunts. Cornell assured me that I did nothing to cause it and that he had to be born with it with the absense of any other liver disease. Unfortunatly, even with good breeders (and bad) liver shunts can pop up. Breeders who are open about it are wonderful. Even show breeders get it. I got my dog from sherlyn yorkshire terriers in connecticut. |
