| Can I get somemore info/feedback on breakaway collars? What about cat collars, they have alot of safety collars for cats, and they are actually a better fit on small dogs. Advice please

| I have 3 Yorkies, Artie, male @ 4 yrs. old, Abigail, female @ 3 yrs. old and their daughter Tiffany Aloha @ almost 2 yrs. old. They have alot of Collars but I use them more like Jewelry than ID's. They are all Micro-chipped just in case they are Lost or Stolen, they will eventually have to go to a Vets. Office or a Shelter? I use Soft Suede Harnesses to walk them and a short 4 foot, stiff Leather Leash for more control. I had a Girlfriend that had a s**tzu, she picked her up from the Groomers, she had a Bandana around her neck, she jumped up and it got caught onto the "Screen Door" handle and choked herself to death! I don't take any chances with anything around their Necks! |

| The breakway collar that I am using for my 10 pounder Pao is a cat's breakaway collar. There are 2 types as far as I know, one is normal collar with a breakaway plastic buckle. The other type has some sort of elastic on the collar itself so when puppy gets his collar caught on something, the elastic will stretch and their neck can come off easily. My baby is microchipped but I still feel better with a tag. It is much easier to read.

| Mine only wear collars when we're outside or if we take them somewhere. When Jake was a few months old, he almost choked himself trying to get his collar off. Ever since then, no collars in the house.

| Yorkie Talker | Reading your replies has made me think that my little Billi may have been damaged by wearing a collar when out for her walks. We noticed that she kept coughing because she was pulling a lot (she's 7 months old), so we now use a harness but has the damage been done. She makes snoring noises when she's asleep and sometimes sounds like she can't breathe. I think I will take her to the vets for a check up. |

| Lily only wears hers when we are outside, she is also micro chipped. The collar is mainly for our laws sometimes when we are at the dog park someone will come and check to see if they have their city tag and rabies tag. Her collar is loose so it can slip off I do not use it to walk her she wears a harness when going for walks.

she would pull me so hard when we walked her that she would start coughing and snorting during the walk. i think it was mostly excitement for her, but i have never noticed any side effects from it

| Interesting thread. I do not use collars for my yorkies as they are so prone to trachea issues. I use harnesses as the pressure is on the chest area rather than the neck area. I do have collars but they are used more as a fashion accessory and I would never attach a leash to a collar. For my larger dogs, they do have collars, but again, use harnesses whenever they go anywhere. Its a personal decision as long as you are aware of the dangers of them for small breed dogs. |

| I love the harness vests with the d-ring. Those can be worn for the majority of the day.

| I have a breakaway collar with tags on it for Zoe. I got it from chattiesmom. It breaks away so I don't have to worry about it hurting her but at the same time, if she should ever get loose, I feel better knowing she has tags. When I walk her, I put her harness on her. |

They come in reflective and non-reflective. I bought the reflective one. Third picture shows the buckle from behind. I stood at the aisle for a long time choosing between this one and the elastic one. How big is your little one? If your yorkie is really small, you might want to consider the elastic one simply because it comes off easier.
