I’m Torn Regarding Collars... To Wear or Not to Wear? I have read one tragic and a couple of scary stories on here regarding collar accidents, most recently from YT member brittahnee. I'm torn! I have a collar for Mia with an ID tag. After reading these stories, I can’t decide whether or not to have her wear it at all, or if she does, when should she wear it? Seems to me, the best time for her to wear it would be when I’m not home, but that seems to be when accidents occur. What if she gets out of the house while I’m away.... is it worth that risk? I’m just a big fat worry-wart when it comes to her..................... I don’t know what I’d do if I lost her! What is your opinion? |
I think it depends on if they could get out of your home. I live in an apartment building so my guys would have to go through multiple locked doors to get outside. Because of this, they never wear collars. I would never suggest a collar if you aren't going to be able to supervise (e.i when you leave Mia home alone and such). There are just to many things that she could get caught on. |
I am too chicken to put a collar on Maddie or Libby. When they are left home alone, they are in their crate and both naked. I too, have read horror stories on here about what happens with these little one's wearing collars. |
Mine wears his collar 24/7. I have never had an issue with it. It holds all his id tags including phone #'s.(He is also microchipped, just in case). When I take it off him for bath time he always begs for me to put in back on. His collar is not used for walks-he has a harness. Also he is a larger Yorkie so the collar issue may be more significant to the tinies. |
Not sure if it helps, I use a breakaway collar just so if it gets stuck to something, it wil come off. |
Franklin and Maggie wear collars when we are home (i.e. they are supervised) in case they were ever to run out a door. They also wear collars when we are out and about. I do take them off when I'm not home though, because Franklin stays in a playpen and Maggie in a crate and the collars could very easily get caught. |
No collars here for me.. my boys dont wear tags. I do have harnesses and I walk them on those, but I dont even own collars. I guess Im more worried about something happening to them with a collar on than I am about them taking off and being found by someone else. |

All of my babies wear collars. We go out all the time and I even though they are supervised, it isn't unheard of for a furbaby to get out of their fenced in yard or out through a door. I have really detailed tags, so I make sure that they wear them at all times. The only times they do not wear them is when I leave the house -- they go in their bedroom, I take their collars off, and put them back on when I return. The most important part is to make sure that the collar is not too loose -- that's when they can get them caught in their mouth, ect. |

For puppies...I suggest break away collars. All three of mine go to work each and every day....now I do not EVER expect one of them to go outside of this building...but just in case...those collars are on. All are properly identified and licensed. As a side note...should any animal here be picked up by animal control..or turned into animal control...with a collar they are held for 10 days...without it goes down to 5. |
Mine don't wear collars. They both wear their harness 24/7 except for bath time. I attach their tags to the harness at the chest. |
Tink has a harness for walks. I do not have a collar for her. I never used a collar on our late pom Tina, she always had harness too. I was always worried what harm it might do, after reading/told many horror stories. She lived until she was 15 1/2. |
Collar or no collar I don't put anything on my Yorkies while they are in the house. when we go out or when I walk them, they wear a harness because it is much safer on their trachea. My littlest guy, Zeus, has a lot of trachea problems and for him I bought a fabric harness at PetSmart and it works very well. Hope this helps, Liz |
