| Hi! I'm new! Hi all! I'm new here. And I don't even have my puppy yet, but we have a deposit down on a yorkie pup and we hope to get him in two weeks (June 5). He will be my 30th birthday present from my husband. We don't know much about him yet. We've been to the breeder's for a visit and I have talked with her on the phone a few times. I think our puppy will be 10 weeks old when we get him. He is supposed to be a little larger size full grown (6-8 pounds, I think). I can't wait! We're planning to name him either Chewie or Cruiser. But we need to go shopping to get him all his supplies before he arrives. Does anyone have suggestions on any particular products that you think are a must-have? What type of food do you think is best? I have a book on potty training but it says they aren't ready to start that until 16 weeks. If my puppy will be younger that that, how do I get started? My husband is a teacher so has the summer off and will be able to be home with him all day. My main concern with the puppy is the fact that we have pet birds (5 cockatiels, 1 budgie, and 1 nanday conure) I am not worried about the budgie - she's always locked up - or the nanday conure - he never leaves his cage and he is a scrapper so I'd fear more for the puppy than the bird if they ever had an encounter. But the cockatiels are out of their cage and on us most of the time. They are very tame. Does anyone else have birds and dogs? Do you have advice for introducing the puppy to the birds and for teaching the puppy that the birds are not food or toys but members of the family? |

| For starters I would stick with the food the breeder is using for awhile. Usually the breeder will tell you what she is feeding and give you a sample when you get your puppy. Good luck with your new addition! |

| Hi & welcome to YT! The one thing I can't live without is my play yard. I keep Bear in it when I can't watch him or when I'm not home, & it's invaluable! A lot of people on here also use xpens. Can't wait to see pictures of your bbys! As for potty training, my Yorkie is only two months old & we're already doing the process. When they're really young you just have to take them outside A LOT. I take Bear out every hour & that seems to be working really well for him. -Amy

| Hi! I'm new! Congratulations and welcome to YT! I too have yet to get my baby. I am picking her up on July 2nd and she will also be 10 weeks and one day old. I bet you are as excited as I am. This web site has been invaluable to me. So much good information. I plan on starting toilet training on day one. I don't see a need to wait until 4 months old. I love both names you picked. I am naming my baby Katy Lou. |

| Welcome to YT. Congratulations on soon getting your sweet Yorkie boy. I had to laugh when you said, yours will be a little larger full grown, 6 to 8 lbs. I'm not laughing at what you said just the weight. My Rudy is at least 15 lbs. There are several yorkie owners on YT who have bigger Yorkies. Sorry, I don't have any pet birds, so don't have any advise for you on that.

| Congragulations on your new little one! Hi, I am so excited for you and the upcoming baby. I know how excited you are. I am going the weekend of June 20 to NC to the breeder from Virginia to get my first female yorkie, born April 12. She will be about 10 weeks old and he would not allow them to leave any earlier than that. We have bought everything under the sun for this new little one. My nineteen yr. old twin girls are about as excited as me. They even bought her a little Bikini, can you imagine? This breeder is so good and has bred little dog breeds for about 30 years and has many good praises. I also have two 8yr. old Bichon Frises sisters who I purchased from him when they were babies. Just today the breeder sent me the first pictures of the baby and she is adorable. We also have a few fat lazy housecats and my daughter has two cockatiels. They are in the cage most of the time but occasionally she lets them out and they have never seemed bothered by the cats, who are declawed by the way, and the dogs just don't know what to think of them. Someone is always close by but I know the birds will try and defend themselves if the cats should become too close. I would not worry too much if I were you. Just take it a little bit at a time and intruduce the puppy to the birds a little at a time. Congragulations on your baby, I know how excited you are. I am so excited, I feel as if I am having another baby myself and like I said my twin girls are 19 and my son is 17. I think it is time for a new baby but this time it will be a four legger. Actually I think I am expieriencing the "empty nest syndrome". My girls still live at home. We are so very close but these days I don't get to see too much of them. They work full time during the day and attend college in the evenings for nursing school. They do not get home til very late. I need something new in my life. Good Luck to you and please let me know how it goes |

| Welcome to YT! Congrats on your new furbaby. I feed Innova - a great food. You can learn a lot about foods by reading the Health & Diet section. I would definitely read up on crate training - really the best way to housebreak your little one. Invest in a good crate and/or x-pen. Decide if you will peepad train or train your little one to go outside or both. Positive reinforcement and training treats or Cheerios are important Lots of patience too Read up on grooming - ask lots of questions and just love your boy!

| We are going tonight to pick out our puppy from the litter. I can't wait!! I'll post pictures tomorrow. Does any one have suggestions on how to pick a puppy? I've read a few articles online. We went shopping for our supplies yesterday. We didn't get everything but a lot. $142 worth! Here's what we have so far: a crate (airline approved - 23 inches) a bed a water dish (ceramic and shaped like a dog's head - so cute!!) a food dish (stainless steel with a rubber bottom) carpet cleaner milk bones (original and puppy kind) jerky treats raw hide sticks some little tennis balls a little rope toy some little stuffed toys a pin brush and metal comb toothbrush kit puppy shampoo conditioner cotton swabs soaked in ear cleaning solution We still need to get: scissors and toenail trimmers detangling solution bell for the door food collar, tag, and leash baby gate Anything else that I'm forgetting? |

| New puppy and supplies! Well I have not gotton my new baby yet but I do go to pick her up on June 21 in North Carolina. She was born on April 12 and the breeder just sent me some pictures of her she is almost two pounds, adorable and should be about 10 weeks when we get her. Believe me I and my twin 19 yr. old daughters have purchased soooo much stuff for this little one, it is like having a new baby for real. It sounds like you have just about everything you will need. About the only thing I have that you did not list was food that the breeder recommended to keep them on and I also got a tube of "nutristat" just in case she needs some extra nourishment. I also got piddlepads, toys, clothes, carrier, harness, leash, beds, blankets, lots of camera film and I have already made a appt to take her into my vet the next day after I return home from getting her. I am in Northern Virginia, just outside of Manassas, Va. I purchased my Bichon Frises sisters from this breeder eight years ago and so I feel good about getting my first little yorkie from him. I have a two yr. health warranty and you have a certain amount of time to have your vet check the puppy all over so I feel good in that I got that appt made. Can't wait to see pictures of your new baby. Good Luck! I know how excited you are!! |
