Default Hi! I'm new!

Hi all! I'm new here. And I don't even have my puppy yet, but we have a deposit down on a yorkie pup and we hope to get him in two weeks (June 5). He will be my 30th birthday present from my husband. We don't know much about him yet. We've been to the breeder's for a visit and I have talked with her on the phone a few times. I think our puppy will be 10 weeks old when we get him. He is supposed to be a little larger size full grown (6-8 pounds, I think). I can't wait! We're planning to name him either Chewie or Cruiser.

But we need to go shopping to get him all his supplies before he arrives. Does anyone have suggestions on any particular products that you think are a must-have? What type of food do you think is best?

I have a book on potty training but it says they aren't ready to start that until 16 weeks. If my puppy will be younger that that, how do I get started? My husband is a teacher so has the summer off and will be able to be home with him all day.

My main concern with the puppy is the fact that we have pet birds (5 cockatiels, 1 budgie, and 1 nanday conure) I am not worried about the budgie - she's always locked up - or the nanday conure - he never leaves his cage and he is a scrapper so I'd fear more for the puppy than the bird if they ever had an encounter. But the cockatiels are out of their cage and on us most of the time. They are very tame. Does anyone else have birds and dogs? Do you have advice for introducing the puppy to the birds and for teaching the puppy that the birds are not food or toys but members of the family?
