I find it a little insulting when I see people post to or about someone who can only afford to spend so much on a yorkie. These little boorgers are expensive. Everyone knows that. Well, especially in todays economy, not everyone has the money to spend a 1000+ on a pet. Does not mean we cant buy toys or vet bills or clothes etc. So I find it insulting when you say that taking in the amount you are spending into consideration means automatically who you cant afford to spend money on all the extras that come into it. I work ALOT and still dont have 1000s in the bank. But I work for my money to be able to spend money on my dog's toys and vet bills and etc. If I was to go out and buy a yorkie right now I couldnt spend more then 600 to 700. And honestly that would clear me out a good bit. But I still could afford to take my baby to the vet and etc. So just because someone doesnt have a 1000 or more to spend in the beginning to get one of these little babies doesnt mean that they are in poor condition to even be considered to be able to own one. So if you consider low income families not good enough to be able to own a yorkie I would ask you now. Please bite your tongue. I work for my money and yes I am still on a budget and no I cant afford more then 700 but there are others like me. Lay off our backs. (no I wasnt the one that had the coment made to I am standing up for someone else) SO LIVE BIG LOWER CLASS!! Cause I am!

I understand where your coming from Callie was $1000 and we by no means are rich but with my issues I have everyone thought I needed a friend and the yorkie fit perfectly with the friend I needed and that was the only price we could find,and my family all chipped in to get me a yorkie and Callie has got to be one of the most spoiled dogs ever she has loads and loads of toys and gets everything she would ever need carseat, stroller everything the thing is to look for good deals and to not buy everything at once and save for the big items. We dont have a lot of money but Callie is always taken care of and happy. Just trying to let you know I understand.

I agree, and I know what you're talking about. It's unfair to make someone feel bad about how much they can spend on a Yorkie...that's not what this site is all about. We should try to keep it positive

Dont know what post you are talking about BUT i agree with you, Everyone deserves to be Happy, and Dogs dont care how much u make has long u provide them with the basics and lots lots of LOVE. besides my babies play with toys that cost 1$ or 20$ they dont know and dont care.

I certainly agree with you. No one should be judged by whats in their pockets. If someone can not afford a 1000 dog like me lol I know there are babies out there for someone like me that are within an affordable price range for me. It really hurts for people to say if you can not afford this price than you most likely can not afford the expense of having a pet. It is really not true. Good Post!

I understand where you are coming from, but what if the vet bills all of a sudden come to $5000 or even $10,000? I have a good friend that has spent $14,000 on her dog's vet bills in the past 4 months! He is only 9 months old now. If someone can't afford to pay $1000 for a yorkie, I'm sorry but I do wonder what they'll do if major vet bills arise. Dogs are expensive to own...can be VERY expensive. And yorkies are an expensive breed to buy...if someone can't afford the purchase price of a healthy, well-bred puppy then my advice to them is to continue saving their money until they can. No one should buy a puppy because they found a "cheap one"....price shouldn't dictate which puppy someone buys. Price of a puppy would probably be the last question I would even ask a breeder...just not important to me. I mean, no, I'm not going to pay $5000 for a pet...but $1000-$3000 is worth it for a healthy, well-bred puppy from a reputable breeder. Think about it...you're going to have this dog for at least 15 years...that's only $100-$200 per year of it's life..not much for the love our babies give us.

I agree with you.

Just remember that these people aren't trying to be evil or malicious, they just want to make sure new Yorkie owners know what they're getting into. When we got Franklin, we had no idea that he would end up costing us over $1600.. and we are still trying to pay it off. Yorkies DO cost a lot and I think it's important that a potential new owner be aware of how costly it really can get. Sometimes people just can't even imagine that it would be nearly as expensive as it really is.

It should be gracefully and with tact, though. I am a broke college student who is by NO MEANS wealthy, but Franklin is probably one of the most spoiled dogs in the world. It's all about prioritizing and budgeting. Who needs lunch when Franklin could get this cute new shirt?

Isn't there pet insurance that covers emergency expenses? Realistically, most people won't have $10,000 to drop on a bill for themselves let alone a pet. How much you pay for the pet initially doesn't mean you can't afford medical expenses, shouldn't you try to find a healthy well bred pet in your price range and save the other money for expenses? Just a thought. I'm sure a lot of people on here wouldn't have their furbabies if they had to pay that much for them, and I've seen a lot of happy Yorkies on this site.

exactly what I was thinking. I pay $40 a month for the babie's pet medical insurance. And there are yorkie out their for under 1000 that are affordable. I know someone who paid 600 for a akc yorkie that is 2 yrs old and is and always has been a healthy puppy that is the picture perfect of a yorkie. Again it comes down to patience conserving saving and finding the right breeder for the person. I know there are good breeders that sell their pups for more then a 1000 but there are also some that sell them for less.

Sorry spending big bucks for a puppy doesnt guarantee a healthy pup but buying from a good knowledgeable breeder does at least for the most part.

You are right. A lot of backyard breeders and pet stores charge more for their puppies than reputable show breeders. But think about the costs that are put into those puppies...costs to buy, raise, and possibly show mom and dad, cost of raising puppies, cost of all the health screening that should be done, vaccinations, checkups, etc. etc. It's not cheap to breed the right way. If puppies are too cheaply priced, I'd suspect health screening hadn't been done, among other things. Puppies just aren't cheap...I hope when someone is deciding on their "price range" that they factor in all the initial vet trips for check-ups and vaccinations, cost of spay/neuter, and cost of teeth extractions, and I hope they leave themselves some room for potential emergencies.

I agree even when your baby gets sick some people still do not have the 10,000 to dish out and most likely will work out a payment plan with the Vet. To me having a healthy pet from a responsible breeder is tops in my book but also knowing that I can get a healthy baby for less than 2000 is great in my book too. I do not know about everyone else but I certainly do not have a 1000 or more laying around me anywhere, I wish i did

1. yes it does cost money. There are some people that breed one or two pairs of dogs to simply improve on the breed and want to produce a few wonderful little babies (I call these hobby breeders) They know what they are doing and want to provide a picture perfect yorkie. Except for showing(which is really not the majority of yorkie owners do) if I bred one litter of 3 it would cost me approximatly the following

$60 for food for eukanuba(may be misspelt) for three months
$400 if a c-section is needed
$200 for vet checks and shots and deworming
$150 dew claws and tail docking (which most breeders do themselves)
$70 for puppy pads for 3 months
$100 if you want to include electricity and water for taking care of the babies
= 980

these are the basics in raising a litter of 3 puppies. Medical prices are based on my vet that I have used since I was 15.

Testing you should do anyways to be a "pet owner" such as testing blood work and diseases just to make sure your baby is healthy to began with.

If I charged $500(which everyone knows is VERY rare) for each puppy I would still come out with a profit of about $500.

There are breeders out there that love the breed want to stay within the standards and raise healthy babies that dont do this as a full time job. It is a matter of finding that breeder. It is possible and all it requires is patience and knowledge.

Do realize I am not dissing on full time breeders which I deeply respect who charge more for the puppies. But not everyone owns 15+ yorkies

And I just want to add I AM NOT TRYING TO INSULT ANYONE. I am simply trying to say DONT INSULT someone because they do mention a "budget" I am not trying to cause issues just trying spread acceptance.
