When my dad was little, he use to tie his dog in the yard. One day he came home from school and the poor pup jumped over the fence and hung itself. (my dad never allowed a dog to be tied up again)
Sadly my dads ex girlfriend would tie her dog to the front porch and he kept telling her not to. Well the pup jumped off the porch and was found hanging.
I think it's good that you are not allowed to tie your dogs, but I think it was more common years ago.

My yorkie is alive and well, but we live in a townhouse with 13 steps up and when he was about 4 months old, he tried to come down and fell. I was so worried. He was fine and didn't attempt it again for about 4 months later. It could have been much worse. My heart goes out to those of you who have lost your little ones to freak accidents. I guess I should also consider myself lucky for having a 12 lber.

It was hard to read through these all, but I think they serve as good lessons. Many of us are new at pet ownership, and sometimes we learn the hard way.

Mine are good lesson and my puppy is alive and well. When sophie was little, I gave her a dog bone to chew, and it was the appropriate size for her(small dog). After awhile I noticed she was pawing at her mouth, and she had gotten the middle part stuck on the roof of her mouth. So now...more supervised, and the middle part of any bone is at least 2X the size of the roof of her mouth. I buy bigger bones and just let her have them for a little while.

I'm also paranoid and she gets carried outside to go to the potty, and isn't allowed on the patio because we have a pool. I worry about her falling in, and it is so very cold. But I think this is a good post though, because yorkies and many other small dog breeds seem to believe that they are invincible and we need to protect them.

My fault, too...when I left the house, I put Johnny in his crate with the name tag attached to his harness. the name tag got wedged between the bars and he was stuck. My son got home about 1/2 hour after I left to hear Johnny crying.
He wasn't hurt but I will never forgive myself and he doesn't wear his name tag any more.

I have a friend whose yorkie was only about 1.5-2lbs, her 4 y/o daughter(who is very rough) had the baby on a recliner with her--she decided she was done playing with her and shoved her off the chair, the baby landed on her head and died--the vet said she probably did something to her brain stem. My friend was devastated.

Another thing that happened with my yorkie, I was in our chain link fenced yard talking on the phone and cleaning up poo when I see my baby on the other side of the fence. She was in the house, but the kids didn't latch the front door--she could hear me, so she went out the front and came around to the back where I was. I couldn't believe the stinker did that!!!

Oh, and when I first got her--the kids go in and out our gate to go to the park. Well, one night I let the dogs out(I was careless and didn't check the gate), and when I left them in--the yorkie was of course gone. I freaked out and started calling her and looking around the back area. I yelled at the kids and told them to get their shoes on to help me find her. I went out the front door calling her--thankfully I had her bell on her and could here her running up the road to find me, she was scared and happy to see me. That taught the kids a very big lesson and they are extra careful with keeping the gate closed.

I am sorry to all of you who didn't have a happy ending.

I know Im going to hear negative comments but I just dont think that children under the age of 12 should have a Yorkie. They are so delicate and I remember when my girls where small and even teenagers they would rough house with eachother and their friends where always in and out of my home. That would scare me. My 14 year old is a very calm child and she does well with the Yorkies. I did see a young boy around 6 yanking his yorkie by the leash. Sorry I scolded him . Just my opinion on keeping our furbabies safe....

Not all children are rough. I've been raised around animals all my life (I got my cat when I was 3 and she died in April of last year) and never once was rough or hurt any of them. I was taught how to be around animals properly and that's what it comes down to. Parents need to teach their kids.

YES, I agree... However with young children it is the grown ups resonsibilty to keep everybody safe. Never leave a little child alone with a defenseless animal. THat is a accident waiting to happen... Adults need to be diligent about this, and in my opinion they can fall short of supervision at all times , therfore accidents will happen more frequently and it is the animal who will suffer in the end. IMO..... coming from 20 yrs. experience of teaching young children and raising a disabled child on my own for 15 yrs .

Kids shouldn't be unattended with any little animals. However, that being said, when I was "under 12" my Grandma raised poms, and we helped with them--played and socialized them and they/we were fine. I remember being told to be careful their legs can break because they are tiny--but that taught me to be aware/more responsible. I think it's unfair to rule out a potential good home because they have children. I agree with researching and even asking them(buyers)--have you thought this totally thru and let them know the risks of having small kids around puppies. My boss raises yorkies--and on occasion when she was out of town, I brought home a litter. My kids--now 6 and 7(were 4 1/2 and 5) love/loved it, and they were very careful with the babies. I supervised them and didn't allow them to run all over the house with them, but it was good for them as well as socialization for the pups. I currently have 2 yorkies-one I bought when she was 2.5lbs at almost a year(kids were 5 and 6) and I just got my 2nd one that also is 2.5lbs and my kids are 6 and 7--they are very careful with them and love playing with/carrying them. I think it teaches the kids to be more cautious--I remind them, even if they are being careful to "Not forget how fragile they are and to be careful". I remember my boss selling a yorkie to a family, the little girl had just turned 5--she was so happy and held that puppy very carefully--she said it was going to be her pup and she was going to call her Sarah.
