Females have more attitude, they will come to you when they are good and ready, but males are the biggest goofiest cuddlebug buddies you could ask for (can you tell i have a male???....lol) I have heard that females train faster (but i have known some people where it took them longer to train their femal...... so it varies......) Females cost more money..... thye cost more money to spay...... When checking out a pup, you want to test their temperment, you dont want them overly agressive but you dont want them nervous either...... be aware of which pups act in an odd way, are lethargic, ect..... massage the trachea and throat of the pup to see if you can induce a cough (this is a symptom leading to kennel cough and sometimes tracheal collapse) you aso want to check the pups gumline and make sure it is nice and pink (white is not a good sign of good nutrition) and you really want to make sure the parents are on premises for you too look at

I'll be honest...I didn't know whether Archie was male or female when we first met him. He was just the one that came up and let us pick him up and was licking our hands, etc. But I prefer male dogs, too. He's just like a little boy. Either way, you want to make sure your yorkie is social and healthy.

As a female yorkie owner, I prefer the female. But I have never had a male, so I can't compare. Good Luck!

| I prefer females. I have a male maltese and a female yorkie. I honestly don't think you can always bank on one sex being better than the other. I believe it depends on each dogs temperment and personality. Just as we humans vary. Some of us are friendly, more well behaved, have great attitudes and some of us don't . Everyone has their own personality. Be it genetics, or the way we are raised, or whatever. The reason I prefer female dogs is really silly. I had 3 sons..I was always the only female in a house with 4 males..it was just nice to have another female something around. Never had a little girl so I want the pink stuff, bows, girlie names, etc. I tend to always end up with male dogs so when I decided on getting a yorkie I stuck it out and waited a long time to get her. Mia is finally my baby girl. In my area female yorkies do not cost more than males, at least not by the our local chapter of YTCA. Now the females maltese does cost way more in my area. Mia is really a sweeter natured dog than my male maltese.

I now have a female Maddie, who will be two in Feb and is the sweetest girl and minds. Then there is Rudy, he was one in Nov and he is a little toot, that does what he wants. My first yorkie was a male Max and he was a sweetie. They all have such different personalities. It would be hard for me to pick between the two. I think Maddie is a lot more layed back than Rudy, he keeps us all entertained.......Cindy

Thanks for all the replies. I go to see 3 little boys tomorrow. Girls are just not avail. around here. They are gone even before they are born and they cost way!!! more. I just want a cutie to cuddle with. I've looked at a few so far and just haven't seen what I'm looking for. Tomorrow holds hope though, they describe more to what I'm looking for. We shall see. I'll let you know if we have a new member of our family tomorrow night. Then the fun begins...... potty training

Hi KP! I am not sure about a difference between males and females. However, I think what you want to look at is the temperment/personality. I learned the hard way that females can be Alpha: socially dominant especially in a group of animals. Some dogs are born leaders, part of the survival of the species. My Tinkerbell "Tinkie" is an alpha dog and is very bossy. The positive of having an Alpha dog is that they are survivors, mine at least doesn't get nervous or is she afraid of anything. She doesn't stop eating cause she is upset or nervous...she is very healthy. However, its kinda a double edged sword, cause she also thinks she is the boss of everyone! My hubby picked Tinkie out for me for my bday. I asked him why he picked her and he said because she was the cutest, but also because when he played with her she was really into it. She enjoyed the interaction, was energetic and wasn't afraid of him. He said the other dogs were shaking terribly, afraid to interact, and wouldn't engage in any play. Anyway, pay attention to the behavior of the dog. Also, another thing to look at is when you go the breeders house: 1. look at the mother and father...make sure the mother has raised nipples..meaning that she is the mother cause they would be raised for nursing her puppies. I have heard horror stories where people will pass off another female as being the mother cause she is prettier or has a better pedigree. 2. The puppies ears should be erect. This is a good indicator that the breeder took time and patience in training the ears. Also indicates the breeder is attentive to the puppies needs. 3. Watch the puppy interact with the other puppies. Maybe you don't want the puppy who is nipping the others or the one that is sitting in the corner shaking. Of course, I got all these tips AFTER I got my puppy. When my sister-in-law found out her brother (my hubby) had not asked her before purchasing a puppy, she was really upset, cause she has so much knowledge on purchasing puppies cause she is a breeder. But, anyway I wish you the best of luck and happiness in finding the perfect puppy for you :-) And, I look forward in seeing baby pictures :-) Annie & Tinkerbell "Tinkie"

If you did follow any kind of "roadmap to choosing a pet" let this be the last thing that you look for in a good breeder.......... a bad breeder can tape up teh ears just as easily as a good breeder can...... go on your gut, does the breeder seem shady? do they ask YOU questions? are they knowledgable? | |

I think I struck a nerv here. I apologize, I didn't intend to do that. The ears thing was a suggestion that my sister-in-law gave me who is a breeder. If you don't agree with this, its okay. I don't really know much about it. I feel like you do about the ears. I don't tape Tinkie's ears cause I think it would be uncomfortable and if her ears were meant to be up they would go up. However, I did learn from Tinkie's groomer that if you want the ears up, you have a window of time to get them trained or they will stay down forever. I am new to all of this, and I get lots of advice from people, not that I agree with all of it or know better to agree or disagree. I just thought I would put out the points my sister-in-law gave me, thought it might help. Sorry, Annie

Male vs. Female Females seem to be a little more expensive but its all in what you want. I think as long as you have a healthy puppy then you are in good shape. Any Yorkie you get just be glad you have such a wonderful dog, I love them and I wouldn't have any other kind!! I have a male and have no problems with him at all. He was easy to train and he love me and followes me everywhere. Females from what I have heard have a mind of their own. Good luck, you will be happy with a male or female yorkie!

I chose a male yorkie just because I prefer males for some reason. All yorkies will give you unconditional love if you respect them, and well, pretty much do what they want. Male yorkies are cheaper. If you have a large family or a lot of friends that drop by, you might want a more assertive dog. If you live alone and have a small group of friends and no other pets, a shyer or more laid back dog might be a good choice. I got the last puppy in the litter, and he was the medium-sized male who was a tad shy. His brother had sold for $300 more because he was smaller and the alpha male of the litter. My choice (well, option) ended up working b/c I have an alpha terrier mix who was in no mood to give up his place. Luca Dean, the yorkie, although the non-alpha of his litter, is still pretty fiesty and fun-loving though b/c that's inherent (or should be) in the yorkie breed; it just takes him a bit longer to warm up to people than the alpha brother probably does. Good Luck in your search, girl or boy!
