| Tail Docking ? The pups are born and the mom is fine and the owner is ... ... ... tired. Ok next thing to plan is the tail docking. Do I need to take them to the vet or is it something that you do yourself ? Bleeding ??

| You have to take them to the vet on day 3-5. I wouldn't suggest day 3. At that time the vet will/should give your pups a newborn checkup and remove their dew claws. The day after you get this done is when you can start to relax a little. In the meantime, puppies don't provide any body heat for the first few days. Make sure they do not get a chill. Also make sure you have trimmed the mother back enough that the pups don't get caught up in her hair and strangle. |

| We do our tails and dew claws at home on day five, but were trained by my mentor.I don't like doing it, but it is less stressful than traveling with pups and moms. I STRONGLY suggest you have your vet do it if you have no one experienced to show you how (and pretty much do it for you the first time). |

| Tails Thank you so much. I will rather take them to the vet. Will it be a problem if day 6 and not 5 cause day five is sunday and here in SA sundays everyhting is closed and if you ask the vet as an emergency it will cost you an arm and a leg.

| Maybe today or tomorrow would be better. I brought my son along to take 'mommie' outside so she could not hear the babies. Also, my vet asked 'how long' I wanted their tails. I think 1/3 is about regular.

| Hi We do our own tails and dew claws.. day 7.. keep your pups on hot water bottle as this is a shock and I know of friends pups who died.. at doing it on day 3.. I don't like exposing them to vet office other sick dogs.. If you pups are really small wait till day 7 if they are bigger do day 5.. Bumbie who was the size of my thumb tail like a heavy peice of yarn.. so tinny.. Let you vet do it but make sure he dosen't cut tooooooo Short.. I hate short tails in a heavy coat.. You can't see them wag.. I cut 1/4" or tad more above the brown under the tail.. I like to see a nice flag when they run around the yard.. Rosie |

| Ooooo, Kimberly, I like that idea. My vet put stitches in Matty's tail and it seemed to take forever for them to come out/disolve. Sylvia |

| My Vet did the puppies tails on day 3. I didn't have any problems. All their tails and dew claws (lack of) look great. Day 7 seems to long to wait.

| Pat was my mentor and she taught me how to dock. I do not like to go past day 3 unless the babies are tiny. They need to be over 2-3 ounces as far as I am concerned. I have no bleeding except occasionally on a dewclaw. I always have the stypticowder poured into the lid just in case. I also have clopay handy in weensy strips. I put tea tree oil near the sites to keep mom from licking a lot. I highly recommend having a mentor..but you can't have mine..LOL |

| I've been docking for 24 or 25 yrs.. I've seen pups that people have done die as they were too small.. some of my pups are very small 3# full grown.. You don't just wack tails because someone tells you to. Everyone has their own way of doing things.. and if your are unconfortable with doing later that's fine.. but you must remember it's a shock to their little bodies and I like them to have a few more onces of energy to work off of.. Also when doing it a hot water bottle is conforting to them.. I know people who have taken them in on the 3rd day and thought they were fine and next morn had dead puppy or puppy's.. I've never lost a pup due to tail docking.. I loose very few at all.. They are so small and defensless and I feel this waiting give them a better chance of dealing with it..I was just telling as to why I do it.. on the 7th day.. Have a great week end.. Rosie |

| tails I dock from 3 to 5 days...Always before it is thicker then the diameter of a pencil. Some are ready at 3 days, some at 5..a few went to 6 and one went to 12 full days..and he looked like a 3 days old. I have docked litters of Min Pins, Boxers, mixed Dobies and dozens of Yorkies..never lost one from a docking, but I approach each puppy as if it was the first one I have ever done, very carefully. |
