I'm sorry to hear that your dog was from a puppy mill. Sadly, I'm sure Lucy is too. I got her from Petland before I knew all about puppymills and pet stores. I wouldn't trade her for the world. But, I will never contribute to one of these stores or puppy mills again. I refuse to even buy dog treats at stores that sell animals now. I also did a puppy report when I first got Lucy. She was from Bentonville, Arkansas but from the USDA reports the most dogs they ever reported being at the facility was 8 total. So I feel a little better, but not much.

When and where did you get your Bell?

i read alot of reports from people who bought dogs from petland . you haven't had any health problems with your dog? hopefully not.. bell is from arkansas too. i got her last august at a small pet store in la mirada, ca called royal pet center.. next month she will be a year her birthday is going to be a celebration!!! her first year has been so hard for her.. but the road ahead thankfully looks promising. i ordered a report on petshoppuppies.org yesterday.. thanks chrissy027 . that is a great website.

I thought she had liver problems but it turns out she is fine. Other than that she is healthy. And I haven't had any other problems with her. She's a wonderful dog. Yes, I have read many horror stories about Petland. Before I bought her I had been looking for local Yorkie breeders because I had just graduated college and had saved up money to buy a yorkie as a graduation present to myself. Well, I was grocery shopping with my mom at Jungle Jim's and saw a Petland it had just opened and I went inside to look around and saw her and I couldn't resist i held her, and I knew that I had to get her. Another reason I refuse to go into pet stores that sell animals I have a huge heart and want to take them all home.

Lucy will be a year next month too. Her birthday is on April 10.

i understand.... it just sucks that it has to be this way in the first place.

(i'm not including the puppies that do get purchased. they're the lucky ones.)... i feel sorry for the puppies because it's not their fault that they were bred in a puppy mill. so, because people don't want to promote buying pets from pet stores/puppy mills, the puppies are left in little tiny cages with their own feces and nobody to love them.

don't get me wrong. i completely understand why we all agree that pet stores are not a good place to buy puppies from because of health problems, etc. that can result. but i can't help but feel that those puppies still need loving homes and someone willing to nurse them back to health if something did happen... i mean, do we really think that the owners of a pet store would care enough to help the puppy if it got sick? probably not since they were heartless enough to buy them from a puppy mill in the first place. well, maybe they might treat it long enough for it to get sold...

how can we really stop these puppy mills from breeding hundreds of puppies? and meanwhile, we're fighting a war against the mills, and these puppies are wasting away in cages in the mall or something...

this brings up a question: if all the puppy mills in the U.S. got shut down, what would happen to the thousands of dogs/puppies? would they go to shelters and pounds, and if they did, wouldn't they still have health issues and cause over crowding of the facilities? would the ASPCA take them? would they be put to sleep? i honestly don't know...

i'm sorry this is so long... i just wanted to speak my mind. thanks!
this is my feelings exactly...I don't agree to sacrificing...... unfortunately the laws let these people get away with it all. therefore there will always will be puppy mills. there will always be these pet stores because of people who impulse buy. you see the puppy .... you got to have it.....we all know how that feels. the pet stores benefit and so do the ugly puppy mills. it is all for money.
If I had it in my powers....I'd subject all these ugly people behind it all to the same conditions they inflict upon these animals entire lives.

Cry my thoughts on this are very personal

As some of you know my yorkie Pepper (that's him as my avatar) was from a petstore. I found out a lot of things after I brought him home. He was born in a puppymill in Arkansas and was sold to Hunte Corp. who sent him via semitruck to california. Pepper had a neurological illness that ended in me having to put him to sleep at the rip old age of 3 1/2 years. We were lucky because the vet (who was on the petstores payroll) said we would be lucky if he made it to his first birthday! For a good part of the day at the end he couldn't stand, walk, sit, eat, drink or use the bathroom without me holding him up. He vomited every single day and coughed horribly when he drank water. When I reported his illness to the petstore they sprang into action...they got a replacement puppy because he was sick AND they got another puppy because they had SOLD him to me. When I contacted Hunte they didn't respond at all. When I finally found his "breeder" I got "gee sorry for your loss". We originally took Pepper back to the store (we had just lost our yorkie of 8 years earlier that month and I didn't think I could deal with another sick baby so soon) but after a few days (when we found out he was in a tiny cage in a back room by himself and he wasn't even getting the medicine WE paid for) we went and bought him back! So because I bought 1 puppy from the petstore 2 MORE were there taking his place. I feel so much guilt about that. I saved one just to double the suffering. NO ONE cared what he and we were going through. We finally got THAT petstore shut down. But his breeder is still breeding and Hunte is still shipping and peoples hearts are still being broken and the poor puppies and kitties are still suffering! Sadly, I believe the only way to stop puppy mills is to shut down every single petstore. Yes, that means some of these puppies will suffer. But I don't know that they will suffer as much as they will if we don't find a way to stop the puppymills now! Here is a link to Pepper on the HSUS Survivor Page: http://www.stoppuppymills.org/survivor_stories.html He is puppy number 2. I miss him so very much and I hurt so deeply everytime I hear about another puppy suffering. Pepper's illness Cerebellar Abiotropy was caused by greed and nothing else. On the day I had him put to sleep the Vet told me they now believe it is caused by inbreeding....it didn't have to happen.

I am so sorry Bell and you are having to deal with this. I want to give you HUGE props for standing by her and getting her the help she needs! I hope you kick the arse of the petstore owner!!! I am so glad she is doing so well and I will be praying that when her tests are done they will show that she is perfect in everyway!

Sorry to be so long winded here. I truly hope I didn't offend anyone...that is never my intention. Just so you know....a very good friend who I met on these boards is a yorkie breeder of good repute...she knew Pepper through the board and she loved him...she sent me Miss Pep C as a gift. I almost turned her down cold because I was so afraid of living through that hell again but in the end I accepted her and she is helping to heal my heart. LOL if I ever learn how to post pictures I will show you her beautiful face! (going to give it a try) She is now 6 1/2 months old and full of all of the wonderful mischief that yorkies are known for.

High fear and low mental capacity from lack of nutrition.

There were so many complaints about sick puppies and them not refunding the money for them. Ours was one of the final ones. I also had gone in there and spoke to the clerk who knew of Pepper. LOL there were people looking at the other puppies and I spoke loud enough that they could hear me...so needless to say they didn't buy any! It wasn't only me who got them shut down. It was the whole community who did it. Also the Humane Society of the US helped me in tracking down his breeder and they are watching her for any thing they can use to go after her. After I contacted her by email she took her website down. I don't think she liked what I had to say to her....it wasn't very nice! LOL These are pictures of my beautiful boy.

Default thanks for all the positive comments!!

court went well.... before we see the judge both parties have to view all of each others paperwork that they are going to show the judge.. when we went outside to do that the owner of the store saw all our stuff and he said okay we don't have to go any further, i'll give you the money owed. so, when it came time to see the judge we told him we had come to an agreement and that was it! so we won!! i didn't get much i only sued for what the puppy lemon law states that i am owed, but atleast i can pay off her medical bills now! the judge said he had never dealt with this kind of case, so unfortunately he didn't get the chance to gain some knowledge, i was looking forward to seeing how he handled it... so yeah, everyhting went in our favor and all was calm. .. you know, i don't think many pet store dog owners know about this law, the puppy lemon law, i know alot of states don't have this but CA does, and i personally didn't know until someone on YT informed me about it. any suggestions on some ways to help get the word out.. maybe that would be a step in helping the hurt dogs and owners of pet stores. and also help the pet stores realize there will be some repricusions (SP) of selling sick dogs. i know my seller didn't expect me to take him to court. i was thinking of making some flyers and posting them at the veteranarians offices in my neighborhood. there are ALOT of puppy selling pet stores in my neighborhood. what do you think?

I am so happy for you! It isn't the amount that you got, to me anyway, but the fact that the owner had to face up and admit to wrong doing!!! WTG!!!!! The petstore Pepper came from ended up giving me back my money because he unlawfully took him from the hospital (after he had paid a LOT in medical bills because he had the contract with the vets office....I had them run all kinds of tests on Pepper) and I told him I was calling the police because he had stolen my dog, I also told the vet's office I was going to press charges because they knowingly gave the store owner a dog they knew did not belong to him! Of course we ended up going back and buying Pepper again a few days later but that wasn't the point either! I am kind of sorry the judge didn't have a chance to hear the case but I am so glad you didn't have to fight for it either.
