| camping dillema Labor day weekend my family is taking a trip up to the JED smith river in northern california. We have two spots reserved right on the river and dogs are allowed. My fiance and i got into a discussion abotu our cat (we can leave our cat in the apartment with plenty of food and water and she will be fine) BUT he also mentioned that his mother would be happy to take care of toby ........ well....... this could drastically change things.... I dont want to flat out say it to my fiance, but i dont really TRUST my future mother in law to watch my baby for 3 days.. she has never been good about her dogs in teh past and toby tends to bolt if he sees an open door (and he doesnt come back to anyone but me and SOMETIMES my fiance)... so it is obvious that i dont want her to watch him, im just not comfortable with it... do you guys think it is ok to bring him on a camping trip??? i know a lot of you guys camp, i think we are going to bring his crate, my parents have a tent trailer so we can leave him in the trailer (locked in his crate) if we have to leave for a short period of time and he cant come (which i dont see happening, considering it is mostly a "play in teh river" kind of camping trip) What do you think? how have youre camping experinces come out? and waht kind of stuff shoudl i bring with me to make him as comfortable as possible? |

| I think Toby will be fine to go camping. We have taken Daisy twice already in our tent trailer. Most of the time she spent just sleeping in the trailer. I would also have her in my lap or on her extendable leash in the campsite. She had fun and did just fine. I did not bring her crate but think it would be a good idea if you wanted to. I just showed her where her wee wee pad was on the floor and she would use it. Happy Camping! |

| Interested in this thread Cause I am 56 have not camped in a few years (actually more than a few) and have recently purchased a camping outfit (tent, sleeping bags, stove, lanterns, etc.) and want to try camping with just me and my pups, my only concern is handling both dogs while setting up. Any tips? Orinskye, I think that Toby will be fine, and I too would not leave him with anyone I did not feel 300% about. My daughter offered to watch my dogs while I had some minor surgery and there was no way. Take Toby and lots of pics. |

| I totally agree! I never leave my babies and have taken them everywhere I go. In fact if they can't go, I can't either. I can't tell you how many meals I missed in the last 20 years, but that's another story. I went camping with Shaddow and she just loved every minute of it. She was a perfect little angel. Just have plenty of water and food and maybe some toys and chews. You all will have a great time. Sue |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Eddie has camped with us since he was 3 months, and he loves it. Just use good judgement if it gets hot. You don't want to leave him in a hot camper. And I'd suggest keeping him on a leash unless you're giving him 100 percent of your attention.

| We just got back from 3 days of camping in a tent. I was suprised at how well Tinkerbell did. You'll have a much better time if you take him, otherwise you'll be worrying! All we took for Tinkerbell was her crate, lots of warm blankies, food (bring a lot, just in case! Squirrels got into Tinkerbell's bag and we had very little left for her!) and water and bowls. Also we brought her x pen that we didn't use and we also brought a 6 foot rope to keep attached to her harness while she swam out in the lake. She found lots of sticks to chew on and bugs to eat. We kept her on the rope 100% of the time. You don't want to lose him while camping! She was very entertained and there was no reason for her not to be there. Why would you not take him? He'll have so much fun! Where in California is this place, by the way? |

| I can understand you not wanting to take a cat camping. Its different than taking a dog bc what would you do if he bolted up a big tree??? Its not you can just call the fire dept. I think a cat would be happiest staying at home. Rather than have your future mil keep him, cant she just pop by once a day and check on him? As far as telling you fiance... I would just tell him that you don't want to put that responsibility on her bc heaven forbid if something were to happen and he were to get out that your kitty would never come to her and that you just don't want to put her in that kind of position.. blame it on the cat! Then he cant get upset with you since he knows that he only comes to you!

| I would take him with. It is a good experience for them and all the fresh air is good for em. I would leave him if you didn't completely trust your future mother in law, imagine how bad you would feel if something did happen to him while she was watching him. Plus you'll just have more time to bond with the little furbaby.
