| Week 1 & Questions Hello Yorkie Nation. Our first week with Lexie has been wonderful. I knew we'd love her, but I honestly didn't realize how endearing she would become so quick. I think we were all meant for each other. I have 2 questions. First - How do we keep her still for grooming? We cant' get anything done with her constant wiggling and wanting to bite the comb. Is there a trcik? Second - House Training. I'm thinking about making her a small pen outside to put her in when we take her out to go potty. I thought we'd put her in it and if she goes we let her run around the rest of the yard as a reward. If not, no big deal. I am hoping that an outdoor bathroon pen will cut down on her distractions when she goes out to go potty - she's more in to exploring then pooping or peeing. I look forward to your feedback. Thanks. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Ahhh, they very quickly get you under their paw don't they? On grooming....I just kept brushing...more or less ignoring the bites and wiggles. Eventually mine learned they have to be brushed. Some people put their pups up on a table and find that's easier too. Pottying ~ I just took mine out and repeated the magic phrase...go potty...712 times. And sometimes they actually went. Really what may work better for you....praise and treats when she actually goes. She'll catch on to those treats faster I think than free play time in the yard.

| Hi and Welcome! I had a hard time when Ziggy was a baby. He was like a kangaroo at bath time and hated brushing. I was afraid to put him on a table for fear he would jump...and he would. He now loves it. It just takes being gentle and patience...try offering Lexie a treat if she stands still for a minute or two. It's just so new to her. The potty pen sounds like a great idea. Especially if there is a pad in there where she can smell where she peed before. Think I'll try that for the new baby boy we're getting. Thanks.

| The potty pen is a GREAT idea!! We did that for Gus, but potty pen is on our covered front porch rather then in the yard..(makes it much easier for the late (before bedtime) potty times...He has done so well, I'd say he is 99.9% trained..(he'll be 7 months on the 26 of this month)we do have a couple of pee pads by the front door just in case WE screw up and don't read his signal to want to go out in the potty pen..once in awhile he might miss the pad, but seldom...Its been a life saver for us especially with the winters in Wisconsin!! |

| I just wanted to let people know that the outdoor potty pen has worked wonderfully. Lexie hasn't been accident free but the accidents happen much less frequently. Also, she gets the potty-pen concept. Often when we place her in it, she both pees and poops within a couple minutes. Then we give her a treat and praise her accomplishment. Ahhh! Cooper HATES to be combed or brushed. I am trying to convince myself that if I keep grooming him he will get used to it. If you come up with any other solutions, let me know! | |

| hope this helps As far as potty goes... My book The Loved Dog (Very good for puppy training by the way!) Say to make a potty a potty and that is it... I have an enclosed area for my dogs to go. Chewy is one and a half years old and he won't go in the house unless he is sick! He is so potty trained... The enclosed area will stop all the sniffing and they will go with in 2 min. I know it sounds like I am exagerating but I swear it is true. Sadie is 14 weeks now and she goes right away when she has to go when we put her in the potty... but she also has accidents unless we are on top of things because she has not learned to hold it till she goes to the potty area... As far as letting them run the yard... I would make that a different time from potty time. I know you want to reward but there will be times you have to go some where and you will not have time for running and playing!!! Potty time is different from play time for us and my dogs know the difference.

| Haha they all seem to hate getting groomed..find a position where they cant wiggle or bite u..its hard but sometimes i have to hold martini in my legs and brush her quick she hates it as much as she hates her bows lol potty training- when we got martini she came with a crate and what we did was we put a wee wee pad in the crate when we werent home and when we were we left one in a good spot for her..for at least 2 weeks martini was in a crate and now 3 mts later she knows how to go on the wee wee pads and the crate has been removed. we had her for about a mt and then the crate was gone we put it away...some dogs take longer then others.. hope this helps

| Chewy hated being groomed and fought it tooth and nail...He is an angel now. (except the nails...that's a fight to the death so I get them done at the vet) I had to brush him every single day to teach him but he got better over time and the more he fought, the more I combed. (I use a metal comb) I think if you stop while they are fighting you they think they can always get you to stop! Sadie is not as hard to groom so far. But she whines... it's pathetic and you would think she were in pain! She isn't. She has no knots so the comb slides right through her coat. It takes very little time. She is just a big baby!!!!
