| Interested in approximate Yorkie Life Span Hi Everyone, I sure do love YT. You guys know everything. I am so Happy to be a part of YT!!! I have a question about Life Span. I LOVE my guy KOBI more than I could ever put in to words. You all know what I mean. You all feel the same way. My baby will be 10yrs old on Feb 11,2008. I just had all lab work done on him today and it all came back normal. He is very active is not over weight is tall weighs 9.4lbs and my Vet said his weight is perfect for his size. I live on a farm and he gets plenty of exercise. He loves to play. He does sleep more than he used to but I know that is to be expected. I feed him Merrick dry dog food mixed in warm water. He really enjoys his food. Is this a good food? I did look in to it and they say it is good. I did ask my Vet what his life span she said probably around 12 to 14yrs. Well of course I don't want to accept that. I'm not saying it's not inevitable and I myself will be the big 5 0 in March UCK! UCK! UCK! lol. I also have my other 3 furbabies Peanut (female yorkie 8yrs) Mose (male maltese 6yrs) and my new little Kermit (male yorkie 6mons). Kobi helps me with them all. Sorry for such a long story but I just wanted you guys to give me some input. Thank you so much. : |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. The average lifespan of a Yorkie is 12-15 years. Some live longer (16-17 years) and it is not unheard of to live even a bit longer. Merrick food is fine.

| I heard of several small dogs that live to be close to 20 years in age. My dad's cousin has had several malteses that lived to be 18 and 19 years old and I've seen several toy breeds that were 16-18 years old at the grooming shop I worked at. I always tell Lacy she has to live to be at least 20

| Zippy my sister's yorkie is 15 and the vet said he has alot more years left. I think being a total spaz keeps him young.

| life span The average life span is roughly 12 to 13 yrs...but many factors come into play. Spay/neutered pets who have a good diet and regular dental care can live much longer..others will not make it to 10 if they are allowed to run free in an unsecure area, eat a poor diet and never see the vet. Heart worm prevention is very needed. Most Yorkies have kidney problems as they age, so I would use a low protein food..mine eat Merrick also. I would have a routine urine sample run and check the urine for proteins etc...bad teeth effect the heart and kidneys, so keep them brushed, pull anything without worry, they do well with fewer teeth, even no teeth as opposed the abcessed ones......best wishes PS..most of mine have died in the 13 to 14th year...several died at 16, one at 17, but many died at 12 also.
