Most Yorkies have kidney problems as they age, so I would use a low protein food..mine eat Merrick also. I would have a routine urine sample run and check the urine for proteins etc...bad teeth effect the heart and kidneys, so keep them brushed, pull anything without worry, they do well with fewer teeth, even no teeth as opposed the abcessed ones......best wishes
PS..most of mine have died in the 13 to 14th year...several died at 16, one at 17, but many died at 12 also.
What kind of the merrick dog food do you feed? we have kidney issues as well and i am curious if you are feeding merrick dry or wet? or both? I researched but maybe i missed one low in protein.
