| He's coming home! :) A couple of questions.. So, I have finally picked out a breeder and I went to look at her puppies today. I chose an adorable 12 week old male that will be coming home with me in 11 days (once I get back to my apartment at school). I'm beyond thrilled and will keep you all updated (with pictures!). So.. before I bring little Franklin home, I wanted to make sure I knew as much as possible and had everything ready before he got here. I've browsed YT extensively and tried to gather as much information as possible. However, I haven't found a thread with exactly the information I want, so I'm giving this one a try. Hopefully you veterans aren't too tired with newbie questions! If you don't mind, please answer the following questions: 1. When your Yorkie was Franklin's age (about 12 weeks), how many times did you feed him/her a day? Or did you free-feed? 2. During said feedings, how much did you give him/her (for instance, 1 cup)? 3. Did you use both dry and wet food? Do you prefer either one or a combination of both? 4. What dog food (brand) do you use? 5. What should I use as far as treats for training? Any other comments/advice you have for a first time Yorkie owner would be VERY welcome! I'm excited to become part of the YT family! |

| Congrats on finding your baby 1. When your Yorkie was Franklin's age (about 12 weeks), how many times did you feed him/her a day? Or did you free-feed? I free-fed Lacy kibble. She wouldn't ever eat much at one time and would just nibble here and there. When she got older, I would put 1/2cup food in her bowl and when it was gone, it was gone for the day. She's on a raw diet now though and I feed her twice a day. If I had a puppy, I'd feed 3-4 times a day depending on size (a tiny one would get 4 a day) 2. During said feedings, how much did you give him/her (for instance, 1 cup)? I think I answered that above 3. Did you use both dry and wet food? Do you prefer either one or a combination of both? I just did dry, but I didn't know as much as I do now about nutrition. Between kibble and canned, I would feed canned - it is less processed and has moisture that is good for them. You can mix the two as well if you want. I think a raw diet is the best for them - there are lots of threads in the health & diet forum if you want to get more info on it. 4. What dog food (brand) do you use? She at Purina Pro Plan puppy for several months until I realized it was crap. I then switched her to Wellness which she ate for about a year before I switched to a raw diet. The better kibbles/canned foods out there are Innova, Nature's Variety, Wellness, California Natural, Canidae, Merrick, among others. 5. What should I use as far as treats for training? i would find natural treats that you can break into teeny tiny pieces. I like Wellness Pure Rewards.

I'm excited to become part of the YT family! [/QUOTE] First off Welcome to YT...you will find a wealth of information here I also got my baby when she was 12 weeks old...(back in April 07) I kept her on the food that her breeder had her on till September (make sure you check with your breeder on what his schedule was like and try to stick as closely to that as possible...remember it's a big transaction going from mom/siblings to a brand new enviroment and he will need time to adjust....With my lil one I slowly switched her to Natural Balance Organic at about 7/8 months and she loves it...she was previously on Eukanuba (which I have read isn't the best of foods for our lil ones). She has always been free fed and is one that likes to work for her food...so I keep kibble for her in her dog dish, but also have it in her everlasting treat ball, or an empty water bottle....and in her Krackle Jax (which you can get here on YT, just search for Kackle Jax and look for Amber_Iv) She eats about 1/2 - 3/4 cups a day....and weighs in at a healthy 6/7 lbs now..... As far as treats for training.......I can't say enough about the Yorkie Yummies that Chattiesmom makes here on YT, they are perfect size for training treats.....or honey/honeynut cherrios...that is about all we use.. I can imagine your excitement on becoming a new yorkie parent...you will find that they very quickly attach to your heartstrings and will become an everlasting part of your life..soooooooo definately enjoy every moment with them......ohhhhhhhhh and take lots of pictures........we all love to see pictures of our babies..........

| I free feed from the time I get up in the morning, until around 5:00 p.m..I put the food back up on the microwave cart until the next morning again..They don't eat a whole lot, but, i do this for all 4 of the inside dogs, and it works out great |

| Right now he is being free-fed. The only problem with this is that I'm worried I won't be able to keep track of his potty. Won't a lack of schedule make potty training harder? How did potty training work out for all of you that do free-feed? |

| 1. I fed Pikko at breakfast (6 a.m.), lunch (12 p.m.), and dinner (6 p.m.). Well, I work full time, so I had other family members feed him during lunch. I would probably suggest you free feed or purchase a feeder that is timed to feed him at lunch and when you're not going to be around. 2. During each feeding, I gave him a little less than 1/4 of a cup to abide to the suggested feeding portions in the instructions. (In total, he has about 3/4 of a cup of food per day.) 3. I just feed him dry food. 4. The breeder fed him Purina Puppy Chow, but I am going to ask my vet what I can switch him to (the ingredients were mostly fillers and not meat - as the main ingredients). 5. One breeder I met simply used Cherrios. But I buy small soft treats for Pikko. Can't remember the brand name. But make sure to break the treats into little bite-sizes at first. Congrats! I'm very excited for you! |

| May I ask if you are getting a 1 yr. or more health guarantee with your new pup? I don't mean to be a downer, but it could be of major importance in the future. I hate to see anyone get a new puppy without the guarantee. |

| Congrats on your new puppy! I've had Cooper for about a week, so I am a novice at this whole thing. But the one piece of advice I can give is what type of treats to use for training. I bought Zuke's Mini Naturals. They are tiny, perfect for little yorkie pups. Cooper loves them and has already gotten the hang of coming when called. |

| I am also a fairly new yorkie owner but have to second that Zuke's Mini Naturals are an awesome training treat!! Sully is SO picky with all treats, etc. but really loves these and they are a great size!
