My dogs from Germany only fly on direct flights, so that leave KC out. I have had them fly into Denver, Dallas, and LA. We have driven to Denver (8-9 hours one way) to pick up puppies and I also bought a ticket and return ticket for the same day to Denver. I used their shuttle service to get me to cargo. I used a customs broker to have the dogs cleared for me, so I would not have to travel back and forth without having a vehicle. The cargo office was so nice. They locked their automatic doors so the dogs could walk around before going back into a carrier. they helped me break down the crate they came in and tape it together. I checked it as my luggage and carried the dogs onto the flight home with me. To LA, scrapindee and her husband helped me out. The picked me up from the airport, took me to cargo, then customs and back to cargo. This was on a Thursday. We stayed with them over the weekend and then on Tuesday Murphy and I flew home. To Dallas, we had another friend pick the dog up at cargo. She kept her for us for a couple of days and then sent her on to KC. If the dog came with the right health papers (we did get another dog's papers in Dallas) then I was able to use those papers to fly home with my dogs even though they were in German. There was enough English on them that they could see they had been vaccinated and had rabies shots.

I think the Customs broker in Denver was $125. We thought he was needed for our first imports and not knowing the area very well. I had no choice when I flew out there, as I still did not know where customs was and needed to spend my time with the dogs before leaving for Kansas. With a customs broker all I had to do was to go to cargo. They did everything else. If you get them the needed information when the dog takes off,(copy of the airway bill, not just a number, copy of the health papers, and a bill of sale) then they can have the dog cleared from customs before it even lands. This save the dog some time spent in the crate too.

The breeder sent me the health papers (email) and I sent them on to the broker. I made up a bill of sale since the Germans won't do it. The airway bill was faxed to the customs broker by the company shipping the dogs. I had to call to Germany and ask them to do this. I found the customs broker by going on-line and looking up importing and then the airport. There was a long list, so I just started calling. I was going to ask prices, but one that did not handle animals told me a firm that would. I just went with them. I had the firm in Denver recommend other brokers for the other airports. Gallagher Transport is the name of the company I used in Denver. The guys there were GREAT!!! So very helpful.

Yes, Petair in Germany faxed the airway bill to the custom's broker and I emailed the health certificate and my made up bill of sale to the custom's broker. I could have faxed them in, but they were already files on my computer, so it was just as easy to email them.

Yes, the bill of sale needed to know Breeder's name & address, type of dog, age, sex of dog, intended purpose, and declared price (My custom's broker told me not to report the full value, because the first one I sent him did. He wrote me back and told me to redo it with a lessor value on the dogs.) I also had the shipping agent put down the custom broker's name as an "also contact" so his name was on the paperwork and Germany's petair would/could contact him.

If you go with a broker, they will know what to do.
