| Confused New Puppy Owner! please read Well I have now had my puppy for two weeks. We can't figure out how much to feed her and what to feed her. The vet said 1/2 a cup of dry food in the morning and half in the evening. That would work if she liked dry food. She only eats moist canned food. The problem is some cans are 3 ounces some are 10. Sizes all vary! We have no idea how much of each to give her, how to tell, and what canned food is good. She loves Cesars puppy chow, but I heard it isn't the best food. We switched to Eukanuba and she doesn't like it as much. Today we tried Iams. We can't figure out what food to feed her and how much. Can someone please help!! I think she is putting on too much weight b/c we are just feeding her until she seems satiated. I'd really appreciate everyones help----our experimenting with foods is hurting my baby's stomach! thanks everyone |

| Eukanuba and Iams aren't "good quality" food according to Whole dog journal...instaed try Innova, Natural Balance, Wellness, Solid Gold etc..., now about the Narural balance the good thing is it comes in rolls..(they are really good..most dogs LOVE THEM)..and so it is soft texture (almost like liverwurst), you could also buy a brand of puppy kibble and mix it in...I give Maixmus 5-6 tsp of dry kibble 3 times a day and I used to add in the natural balance rolls...most people here free feed..(leave kibble out all day long)..so the pup can eat as they please...Maximus is a cow and would eat every last drop and get sick..lol, anyways as far as the natural balance rolls..you can give a 1/2" slice with every meal and 2 tsp of kibble..I don't know about wet food because I never fed it...HOW old is your baby?...when I first got Maximus I was giving him his kibble moistened..but I stopped that after about 2 weeks because he enjoyed the dry kibble so much more...hope I helped

| I hear ya! Finding something that these little guys like that is good for them isn't easy! I switched from Science Diet puppy little bites to the Nutro, natural choice for puppies and my guys wouldn't eat it at all, so I went to Eukanuba, they wouldn't eat that, so back to Science Diet and they've been eating it good for quite a while now. I thought about Solid Gold or Innova, but couldn't find it here locally. Also, I leave their dry food down all the time, but that's mainly because I have a small yorkie (I can't say he is tiny anymore after seeing the pictures of Rupert, the yorkie) and I don't want him to get low blood sugar. My bigger yorkie has not gotten overweight though from the free-feeding, so I think it is okay to leave dry kibble down. I don't feed wet because it gives them loose stools and we're still ironing out the potty training! I don't know if that helps you any, but I just wanted you to know what worked for me.

| I am sorry you have having problems. It would help to know her size and age. The dry kibble is really the BEST thing for them, especially for their teeth, but is she is REAL young (under 10 weeks), and real small (under 2 lbs) then the most important thing is just that they EAT to void low blood sugar and/or dehydration. Have you tried boiled chicken and rice? You can mix the wet food she likes with the dried and, as she gets older, decerease the wet, so that she is mostly geetting dry kibble only. Good luck. |

| I free feed and give 'special' breakfasts. I use Purina Puppy Kibbles and Bits, it has hard and semi-soft morsels, that's what I free feed (it's the only thing our chi will eat, and boy does she eat, but she's really active and not overweight). In the morning Lida gets the Science diet mixed with a little puppy formula for moistening. I find she stops eating before she's full if I just give her the dry. This way I know she's getting enough, and she kind of snacks on the kibbles. Occassionally she gets some chicken and rice, but not too much, I don't want to get her use to it in case someone has to watch her for me. I've always heard that yorkies were notorious for being picky eaters so I would think if they like something and they are getting the right nutrition that would be the way to go. | I know this is not a popular opinion here but she will eat what you give her. Put her in the room with the food for 10 minutes twice a day and then whether she eats any or not pick it up. She will eventually start eating. Dogs can go 3-4 days without food as long as they have water, even yorkies.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | The one thing I would like to add is to really be careful how fast you are switching your little one's food...if you switch them too fast it can upset their stomach and cause gas and stuff...I would also watch out when you are switching, you said you have only her for two weeks, at this time she is still adjusting and may not be ready to switch foods... We feed our girls Nutro Puppy Lamb and Rice and they love it, they get 5/8 (Magic who is 4lbs) and 7/8 (Sailr who is 5lbs) of a cup of day...and we divide that over three meals, as Sailor would just love to eat all day if she could!!!

| I have to agree with typerk. They'll eat what you give them and dry is best for their teeth. We try to get ours off the canned food by 12 weeks depending on their size, though I do use it during weaning. Three times daily for the first 6 months is recommended, then twice daily after. We do supplement with canned to pregnant and nursing girls and sometimes for the boys when someone's in heat, they have trouble remembering food exists. |

| 1 cup of food per day, WOW, that is a lot for a small puppy (assuming what you got was a puppy and not an older dog) Chewy is nearly 5 month and he gets 1/2 cup all day to freed feed, which he rarely finishes. I feed natural Balance which is a great food and he loves it. The meat rolls are good as well and he get that a couple of times per week. I found that when I switched to NB, Chewy was not eating well so I gave him the rolls, but they will eat what you put out eventually. It is very important to choose a food that has no corn, soy or by-products in it. |

| Bruce gets 1 1/2 small handfuls this is roughly 1/2 cup of Royal Canin mini pupppy to eat all day! He only gets dry food and then treats, 2 puppy biscuits per day, more when we are working on learning commands. He rarely finishes this much, and I let him free feed because he is a bit of a grazer... It is really important to feed your baby a high quality food...And not to be rude but Iams is not a high quality food, but hey they sure advertise and price it like it is! I think you should ask your vet to reccomend a brand of food. Also a yorkie pup or any small breed pup should really be eating puppy formulated food until they are 10-12 months old. These little guys need lots of energy! |

| Do not let your puppy go without food. Gracie went through this too. Once she did not eat for two days - I think she was about 4 months at that time. The vet went nuts when I told her. She said that while she was a growing puppy she had to eat! The problem we had was that the breeder told us we could give her some chicken once a week and so we gave it to her once and then she wanted it from then on and would not touch her kibble. That is how we got into the mess. The vet said to wet her food and make it soft, basically do anything we could to get her to eat because letting a baby go without food could be quite damaging and to worry about putting her back on dry kibble later when she was older and had some weight on her. She told us not to play hardball with a puppy over food. For about two months I actually hand fed her, piece by piece, played games with her for food, threw food accross the floor so she would chase it and get it and eat it... Finally, she started eating it again. But, she was perfectly willing to stop eating to hold out for chicken!! Be careful.

It's important to monitor how much your puppy eats every day to make sure they are eating ENOUGH. When I first got Katie she was an EXTREMELY picker eater and I didn't realize she wasn't eating enough (because she and Codie share bowls). I took her to the vet and it turned out she was a little dehydrated. Now I leave the dry food out all day for them to pick on and everything seems fine. Katie's appetite has grealty improved.
