| Is your Yorkie crate trained? More specifically, I'm wondering about crate training in the post-crate days. Jesse is currently doing really well with crate training. We're working our way up leaving him alone for longer and longer periods of time. No longer than half an hour right now. I want to make sure he adjust slowly. He sleeps in his crate. He loves his crate and rarely complains. What I'm wondering is this. Once I allow him free roam of the house, will he still remain crate trained? Like, if I stop crating him at night and when I go out, will he still take to his crate if I stop using it on a regular basis? Thanks, Sarah |

| Yes, I think so.. if that's what you routinely will do. Bailey was never crated at night, only when I leave the house. So now when I pick up my purse and keys he knows he's either going with or in the crate..so he waits for my look and if I look towards the crate..he goes right in and waits for his treat. I have always crated him when I'm gone.. I would like to let him wander but I tried it once while I left for a short while and my neighbor watched him go from sliding door to windows..nonstop..so he's just more comfortable in his crate. So why mess with a good thing.

| I"m just starting out with baby Tucker, but I was still at home when my parents bought Jake, their yorkie. He was left in his crate whenever no one was home and did very well. After he was around a year old, my parents started letting him have free roam of the house gradually - first the kitchen, then the kitchen and living room, etc. Besides a few accidents the first couple weeks of his "freedom" , he did phenomenal. He's now 6 years old and his crate has been replaced with a doggie bed in the same spot. He goes to his bed to rest or if he feels scared or in trouble. He hasn't had a potty accident in the house in several years. I hope this answers your question! |

| Ok here is what I think..lol I have 4 yorkies...we bar them on sometimes in the kitchen, and many times in crates..they feel safe in both places..I think if I did not use the crate at all, then it would not take long for him to say, hey I do not like this anymore.. then you get the dogs, that there crate will always be there den. a lot depends on the dog alone... If we are away in the RV if I put them in crates they remain much more quiet. no windows to look at of and bark at anyone that goes by. I think having them use to a crate is always good, then if it is really needed they will not mind... hope this helps.. pooh's mum |

| Mine are crate trained meaning they will not potty in their crates. They are also housetrained and ring a bell to go outside. If no one is home for an hour or two they roam free. If it's longer, we crate them to avoid accidents (if they ring the bell and no one lets them out they will eventually go on the floor, and who can blame them really) Loki LOVES his crate and often sleeps in it during the day. He willingly goes in there when we leave. Crate=Treat+Nap, his two very favorite things. Sammy came to us crate trained but not trained to LIKE her crate. She screams because she is a princess and how could we possibly put her in there?? The screaming has significantly improved and she does not scream after we leave the house. The funniest part is that she often sleeps in her crate or Loki's crate when SHE chooses to.

| Rockie is almost there. Sometimes he just walks right in when I open the door when he wants his privacy. But when he wants to be in the thick of things he whines. |

| Deiter was crate trained. He will go in by himself sometimes and just lay down. They adjust very well.
