Yes - Size does matter.

I admitt that I wanted 'tinies' - TJ was 1.8lbs at 13 weeks and Roxy was 2.1 lbs at 6 months. - I thought they would both be around 3-4 lbs full grown.

At 3 years old Roxy is 5 lbs and TJ is 7 lbs.

I love them to pieces and they are the PERFECT size for me.

The reason I say size matters is b/c I have family on the West Coast and I needed to make sure all of my dogs would be able to fit into a carrier that could go in the cabin with us when we travel. I would never put a dog into cargo - so the main reason I wanted 'tinies' was b/c of travling on an airplane.

I admit that I did want them 'smaller' but I am so happy they turned out 'bigger' - At this size they are 'playable' without me worring if they will 'break'

People, my AKC purebreed yorkie cost about $2000 and he is in the double digit weight criteria-11 lbs! OMG! 11 whole pounds!

think about it. And let me tell you, I would not change one thing about him. Not one. OK maybe just how cute he is, it's just too cute and almost manipulating.

Yes size does matter. When I purchased my yorkie, I was VERY worried about having TOO small of a dog. SO, to me I wanted to take every precaution to ensure I was buying a puppy that would mature to a healthy size dog. Granted, I did my research before hand to ensure I got a bigger dog, but not everyone does. I had my reasons for wanting bigger, and there are plenty who have GOOD reasons for wanting smaller.

I don't agree in getting a puppy who matures to 3 lbs and being mad that he's not smaller, but I CAN understand being upset that a puppy you thought was going to be 5-6 lbs turns out to be 15 (which is out of the standard). And YES a responsible breeder who knows what they are doing knows how to estimate size. IT is the backyard breeders who don't know the lines of their sire and dam who wind up having puppies who don't fit the standard at all. When you KNOW your dog's lines, and you KNOW what you are doing you breed to the standard and know what to expect. (I am no expert but I have read tons of info reguarding yorkies & breeding. I have also read a lot of breeders input over on the breeder section.

I do NOT disagree that we shoudl love our pups regardless of size/color or even the fact that they turn out to be a mix (like my Trigger). However, I learned the hard way that if you use a backyard breeder, instead of an experienced one you NEVER know what you might get. That however does NOT apply to all breeders, there are several on this board whom I could mention. But, don't want to leave anyone out.

This is so not true! My yorkie(14 lbs) parents were 4 and 6 lbs. she thought mine would be around 4 lbs. I have spoken to vets about this, there are throw backs..Breeders can NOT tell you what your puppy will weigh, all they can do is guess..I have learned from my big one, and I told myself after getting one this big, that I would never buy from a breeder that said your pup will be this size..the last breeder said she should be around such and such a size..it's all a big guessing game..Heck, my son is almost 6'6", my hubby is 6'1"...whoever thought my son would have gotten 5 inches taller than my hubby and been in a size 14 shoe??? My other son is 5'8"...

I don't think its "so not true." There are exceptions, but for the most part, a knowledgeable breeder should have a good idea of how large their puppies will get.

I agree. There will very occasionally be exceptions but good breeders know that their pups will be the size the standard states. That is something a lot of people don't realize when they are new to the breed- I didn't myself. My Gracie's parents were 3 1/2 and 5 pounds. She is 8 or 9 pounds. This happened because the breeder didn't know his lines not because it is unavoidable. It's breeders like that who have so many people coming to YT not understanding why their dog doesn't fit the standard. Breeders can't predict that a puppy will be exactly 5 pounds but they can predict that they will resemble the standard.

The breeder I got my first one had been breeding for 18 years.

by the way, i just put down a deposit on my first yorkie last weekend (YAYEE!) and i never asked the breeder how much my pup will weigh full grown. i am accepting whether my yorkie is 4 or 7 or 10 pounds or more! ill love him either way. im just glad i got my family to agree to me getting puppy! yayee!!!

Guilty!
I have asked lots of questions about my Ollie who is now almost 8 months and 12.6 lbs. It is only because i am CURIOUS and feel this site has so many knowledgable owners. I knew not a thing about yorkies when he was given to me. I didnt understand a lot but now i do thanks to this site. I didnt know there was a possibilty he would grow so large or that there were silky or cotton coats or the color changes. When i first started reading this site i was AWED! So of course new owners are going to question the experienced owners. I was so excited to post pics and get comments and learn as much as i could. This does not mean that anything anyone could possible say could effect the love i have for Ollie. I only want to learn about him.

I felt the same way when i looked at my newborn skin babies with wondering if their eyes would stay blue or there hair would stay dark----curious. Then i read and tried to become knowledgable just like i am with my new furbaby.

I take Ollie everywhere and i am constantly told there is no way that he is a yorkie. But i know that he is because he has THAT yorkie personality i read about over and over on YT!!!! I only wish i would of discovered this breed years ago!

I think the majority of people look at the standard books when deciding on a breed of dog. They look for what they personally find cute and then read about temperment and decide if that breed will fit their lifestyle and that is THE homework. I am 44 years old and if i would not of discovered this site i would not of known what homework to do when and if i ever get my yorkie girl.
BTW size does not matter to our family.
