| Dolce finally mastered the SIT command!!! Yep, thats right, she was doing it ALL day yesterday and i was soooo excited. I know its not much, but I have been trying to get her to do this for weeks with no luck. I was so proud it was ridiculous. I have to give some credit to my mother though, since she had a hand in the training. So now Dolce comes when we call her, she is totally housebroken and she can SIT!! Just thought I would share with my fellow yorkie owners!! |

| Congrats Dolce! Momma sure is proud of you! Getting them to come, sit, and stay are perhaps the most important commands they can learn! |

| Dolce: "Thanks fasteddie, u know I try and please my mom as much as I can, but sometimes its hard for me...thank you and all the owners on here for giving my mom such great advice on us yorkies!!! You guys are the best!!!" I agree with my little one...you guys have all been a real help and I dont know what i would do without you all. Now we are on to the STAY command. I have been trying to get her to do this, like when we go out the door to leave, she always tries to come with us. So I have been trying the STAY command, so she knows she is not allowed to come with us unless I say. Its going so-so, but I guess it takes time. Hopefully she'll get that soon too!! |

| Good job, Dolce and Mom!!! It does take a while but in the end it is sooo worth the wait! Once they learn one thing, they are so eager to please, the rest is easy!! Toto is 16 months and is just now beginning to grasp the "stay" command. She knows lots of commands but has refused this one up to now! I really think she knew all along ... just didn't choose to do it!!

| Thanks bettyeanne.....LOL....so your telling me I have a few more months on this "STAY" command?? She still of course thinks that she should get treats no matter what she does, but now if Im holding a piece of apple in my hand and say "SIT" her bottom hits the floor in a flash!! I'll keep on trying the STAY command and I totally agree with you that I think they really know what your saying all along they are just little buggers and are saying to themselves "lets see how long I can get them to think I DON'T know what they're saying" Let me know how Toto and the STAY command works!! I love that Toto she is just so cute!! |

| Thanks!! Dolce's Mom! I think the key for Toto was persistence! She is 16 months and is just beginning to obey "stay"! We even had a trainer to come to our house when we were in Lake Charles! We also got a firmer "I really mean business" tone in our voice! For the past few days she runs to the door but when we tell her to stay ... she does!! She learns other things after just a couple of tries ... I think she just didn't want to stay!! Keep up the good work! The next thing we are going to work on is to stop her from jumping up! She can jump almost waist high on me [of course, I'm not even 5 ft. tall] but I'm afraid all that jumping will injure her little knees so I am going to drag out the training books and begin to teach her not to do that! Will let you know how she does.

| It's been really interesting to read all your messages everyone. Nice to know that the yorkie nature can be stubborn in general...Your tips above are great. (Apples as a training tool? Boy would that be great, these doggy treats at the store cost so much...) I had read about using clickers as training tools...anyone else use them? I think Kady would want the food though, hah! When Kady was oh, about 4 mos old I taught...no wait, she decided to let me think I taught her down (laying all the way down on the floor). Well, that was fine, but then when I wanted to teach her sit, she'd go all the way down. Only recently does she sit, and I know she knows it, but she is stubborn as all get out about it. She'll go all the way down, I'll say, "no, sit pretty for me" and she wags her little butt and grumbles about it and shakes her head at me, all the way complaining as she gets up to the sit position...it's funny to watch. She really likes to think she's the boss of me (I guess truth be known...she's right) Last edited by Susette; 12-08-2004 at 05:07 AM. |

| It is so true...they are sooooooo stubborn!!! Oh and they are DEFINITELY the boss of us. This morning i was leaving for work and she knows that its time to go in her playpen. Well, when i tell u she went flying like a greyhound around the house and I could not catch her for the life of me. Of course I was mad at first, but then just thinking about what it must look like to have this 3 lb thing giving me a run for my money was hysterical. I finally caught her, but i have to laugh everytime i see her running....is it me or dont they look so funny?? (and adorable of course) They are so unbelievably smart....last night my mother had forgotten to put a wee wee pad down in Dolce's usual spot in the living room....so she looked, saw it wasnt there and made a mad dash for the family room where her other one is located. Did her business and she was gone. Oh and yes apples work WONDERS!!! Of course I dont give her too much at one time, wouldnt want her little stomach to get upset....but she absolutely LOVES them. You are so right about the treats putting a hole in the pocket..plus when she's very picky as it is, I wind up wasting money most of the time because she doesnt like them. Try the apples, Kady might take a liking to them, and let me know.... Bettyeanne, keep me updated on all of Toto's progress in the command dept. I would love to know how she is doing....I will keep u posted on Dolce too!! |
