| My yorkie is crate trained question about size My Finnigen is 5 months and for the past 2 weeks has been 100% housetrained.. goes to the door and scratches. We have crated trained him so that when he can't be watched he is in his crate. Usually from 11-7 overnight and total day time 1-3 hours not always at once. I have a plastic crate (the cat size small one I think it's up to 7lbs) that I had been making my own dividers to make smaller. Finnigen is 4lbs... first I was using wood and covering it with his blanket, then tile and covering it with his blanket, then two towels and covering them with his blanket... well everytime the little bugger pulls the towel down and goes and lays at the back of his crate. He has only ever had an accident in his crate once (it was our fault we had gone out of town and were 2 hours late getting back and he was in there in the dark over supper hour -- my poor baby). My question is can I remove the barrier all together and let him just have his crate... even though it's big enough for him to lay at one end... will he automatically soil it or has he learnt enough to cherish his space...anyone with experience here? |

| I have crate trained my baby too. I have moved my five month old Tucker into a larger space for when I am away and he is doing great. I got a wire fence play yard from petco and it gives him about a 4 ft by 10 ft area to play in. I put it in the kitchen and it has his bed, toys, food, and water. He has had only had one accident and that was because I was lazy and slept in one saturday morning and he didn't, he got up and used the floor. I considered that my fault. He is only in there when I can't watch him. I love being able to put him somewhere that I know he is safe when I am not watching him. He is still so tiny to me. It is working great. Hope this helps! | Like you know you crate train because they won't go were they sleep. So I would think that if this is his place and he cherishes like you say he will consider the whole space his and not want to go in any of it. I know that many people have larger crates that their older dogs use and its still their bed and they won't go in it. I think its just a matter whether he's ready or not, if you feel he's ready go for it.

| My Shorkie Ruby is 15 lbs, so when looking at crates we found 10lb or less one and a 25lb or less one....of course we got the 25lb one, so she does have a little extra room...she also curls up in the back (laying widthwise) as does your baby. She has never soiled her crate...I just think they like the sides of the crate next to them so they feel more secure and snuggly

| As I recall (our little 2.5lb girl is almost 9 yrs. old now), Marci would only go in her crate if there was no other option--- if we had been gone an hour too long, etc. And, she knew that she wasn't supposed to in her crate, because when we'd come in, she was cowering in her bed in the crate. We did have the smallest crate we could find, and had placed a hooded cat bed in it (for her den), which helped to take up some of the space. Her food and water dishes took up even more-- so very little space for her to do anything but sleep and eat. Hope this helps. Pam |

| A cat bed great idea Right now Finnigen has a fleece blanket I made him in his crate but the cat bed would take up the extra space and I could easily put his blanket in the the bed. I'm going to check them out. Thanks |
