As I recall (our little 2.5lb girl is almost 9 yrs. old now), Marci would only go in her crate if there was no other option--- if we had been gone an hour too long, etc. And, she knew that she wasn't supposed to in her crate, because when we'd come in, she was cowering in her bed in the crate. We did have the smallest crate we could find, and had placed a hooded cat bed in it (for her den), which helped to take up some of the space. Her food and water dishes took up even more-- so very little space for her to do anything but sleep and eat.
