Like you know you crate train because they won't go were they sleep. So I would think that if this is his place and he cherishes like you say he will consider the whole space his and not want to go in any of it. I know that many people have larger crates that their older dogs use and its still their bed and they won't go in it. I think its just a matter whether he's ready or not, if you feel he's ready go for it.
