| Please Help Hello, we are new to the forum and had a question or to and need advice- we bought a 6 month old yorkie from a lady and the whole litter was kept in an indoor playpen(dogs not pottytrained) we knew we would have to train her so we have been trying the litter box way which has been failing for about a month- I bought a cage which has her litter box and bed, she goes to the bathroom everytime in the litter box when she is locked up(and gets praised for it), but when we let her out to play for a bit or eat she will go anywhere and pee except her litter box, she gets punished and then put back in her cage and uses the bathroom as she is supposed to, but once we try it again, she can be right beside her litter box and take off running to pee in the other room.. any ideas????????????????????????????? thanks |

| Yorkies are hard to train and some take longer then others. are you useing the same littler box you have in the cage for her? If Not then I would use that one when she is out also. Maybe you would have better luck in taking her out to potty. sorry im not much help . Good Luck. How many dogs did that lady have in one playpen? was they puppies or 6 months old. was the playpen kept clean? If not I would turn her in. |

| the playpen was fairly clean when we got her, it was from an elderly couple who had them when our puppy does wrong we do say NO and stomp our feet once and put her back in the cage its hard to take her outside to potty train due to our work hours, sometimes we only work a few hours but then sometimes up to 12 hours, and for that 12 hours she will use her litter box in the cage, but as soon as we get home and get her out(and in a confined area) she will not use the litter box and darts off to pee somewhere while we are trying to chase her, and she doesnt even squat to take a pee or poo |

| i wouldnt punish her for doing that, but when you do catch her peeing or pooing, say a very loud stern NO... i dont think they know what a punishment is and its kinda cruel.... just say no and direct her to her pee area...you have to be persistant... its rough now, but its worth it.

| my girls are not 100 % potty trained. But for the most part they are. It's hard work 24/7 job! If you are consistent they figure it out. If you hang in there it will work out! |

| Make sure you aren't punishing her after the fact. Any type of negative response when the puddle or pile is already down only causes her to learn not pee in front of you, which causes further housetraining problems. You're also making her think the crate is a bad place by "punishing" her when you put her back in it after an accident. You have to be really carful what associations your little one learns with things. Consistency is the key here, and I would also highly recommend training her to go pee and poop on cue. Whenever you see her go pee in the litterbox give her a command (the same command every time) for it. I'm blunt about it and say "go pee" but you can use any short word. Give her a different command for poop every time she does that, and then praise her (use a happy, excited voice) and give her a treat every time she does it with the command (you have to give the command WHILE she's peeing or pooping for it to work). While they're learning the command I say "go pee" while they're peeing, in a soft, calm voice. Immediately after they finish I say "good pee!" in a happy excited voice, and praise and treat. Once the dog has the command down, don't forget to reinforce it by saying "good pee!" when they finish every so often. Once she seems to recognize the command, let her out of the crate, but snap a leash on. Give her attention for a second, then walk her back to the crate and into the litterbox and say "go pee" (or poop or both, whichever she'll need to go based on her previous potty patterns). You'll need to learn to recognize her body language as to when she does need to go and when she really doesn't. (Though Missie will sometimes fake pee if I'm insisting that she goes. lol) For my dogs, if they seem restless or excitable I make SURE they go outside until they pee. If they stare at me it usually means they don't have to go, and I don't make them go out. Watch for signals like that from your girl. Also, as soon as you get home and let her out with a leash on, clean out her litterbox. It could be that she feels the box is too dirty by the time you get home, so she immediately runs elsewhere to pee. So while you give her attention (on leash) for a second, have someone else clean out the box (or clean it out with her tethered to you), THEN walk her back in and ask her to go potty. The main thing is not to chase, yell at or scare her. She's really unsure what you want right now, so realize that it's not her fault for peeing in the wrong place, it's your fault for not communicating to her where you want her to pee. As soon as I learned that housetraining accidents were MY fault (I didn't take them out often enough, pay attention to their signals, communicate what I wanted, etc.), we had housetraining down in a flash. Good luck!

| Very well said "MissiesMommy". This is what I did with a liter of mine and I still have one girl that My daughter is going to take in the spring. She is only 4 months old and is 99% trained to go on a pee pad or outside with her parents. If she has to go between the outside times, she goes to her pen and goes on the pee pad. Whenever I see her go in there to potty, I go stand by the pen and say "go potty" afterwards, I praise her and tell her over and over "good potty" in a very happy, excited voice and pet vigorously. If she does have an accident outside of the pen, I just clean it up and do not say anything to her. When I catch her in the middle of her job, I briskly scoop her up and take her to the pen and tell her to go potty.

| thanks for the tips, as far as punishment all that was is saying no and stomping the foot , she did fine today going in her litter box but wow can she hold it, she can go a half a day with holding it and will try desperatly to get around us if we are trying to feed her or give her water- we did finally catch her in the act tonight of going to the bathroom so we gave her a treat and plenty of praise but have any of you had a yorkie that can hold pee for half to a full day at 6months old and again, thanks for the suggestions |

| She will get the hang of it. Hope some of this helps you. And yes my little 4 month old can hold it for quite a while. Last week I started putting her in a small carrier (hard plastic) and placing her by our bed and so far she has held it from 11:00 pm until 7:00 am without an accident. my other 2 yorkies sleep with us and I am trying to get her to where she can join them. Good thing we have a king size bed!. The only real accidents she has had, has been happy pees. She just gets so excited to see us when we get back home that she looses it sometimes.

| ok we are giving the new update- when she is in her cage with only her bed and litter box , she will use it, when we let her out she will play for a while and it is obvious when she has to go because she will start shaking, we then put her near the litter box but will just lay there in it, we will walk out of the room and she will jump out and pee or poop anywhere before we can catch her- tonight i watched her for 5 hrs trying to get her to go with the gate open as she shaked the whole time(i did talk and encourage her the whole time), she jumped out of the litter box and sat beside me and started to pee so i put her back in the box and she finished- i made sure she was done and she came to me, i held her then she took a dump on me. she has shaken like this since the day we got her(at 6 months old) when she has to go to the bathroom, she will hold it for hours and not move until she thinks i am not looking. but when i am at work she uses the litter box everytime like she is supposed in the cage any ideas?????????????????????????? |

| If the litter box idea isnt working outside of the crate, why not take her outside when you come home and let her relieve herself out there? She is 6 months old and should be able to hold it in her crate for quite a few hours until you get home and then let her out right away...no play time in the house until she goes outside first...then let her out every 30-45min while you are home. I have never had any of my dogs mess in their crate...even as young as 12 weeks, they held it for a couple hours until we came home. I tried the litter box and pee pads but forget it..they are happier to hold it and go outdoors. I think for some dogs it just doesnt work to use the litter box or pee pads...good luck to you!! Dawn |

| we will have to maybe try that idea more, we carry her outside once a day, which the entire time we are outside with her she will just sit LOL doesnt want to run or play til we take her back inside, most stubborn pet we have ever had, my rabbit seems to be twice as smart, he lives in the garage and is fully potty trained LOL |
