| She pees when she sees me! Pancake is almost a year old now and is completely pad trained! But if me or my boyfriend have been gone for a while and come home, she gets so excited and pees on the floor. Even sometimes when my bf is playing with her and sometimes uses a deep voice, Pancake will think he is angry and she pees. It's kinda cute actually, she lifts her little leg about a centimeter of the floor, oh I love her so much. But the peeing is too much. I've read it's a submissive sort of thing, and they do it because they think it pleases their owners, and then the owners scold them for it, and to please them they pee for them and it is this vicious circle kind of thing. Frankly, I don't really believe this. A dog knows how to please their owners, it's what they live for. And if we scold her for peeing when she gets excited I don't think she would do it some more to "please" us. Anyway, is there anyone out there who has had the same problem? Anyone have any remedies? Thanks so much for any help! |

| Actually that is true. It's instinct to them. When you hear something funny, you smile or laugh right? Same thing. Try some positive training, like clicker training. When you come home just ignore her for a while and don't make a big deal about it. I've also read that training with food competes with their urge to urinate - since they can't really eat and pee at the same time. I would try to build her confidence with some clicker training.

| thanks for the reply, I have tried not paying attention to her and this seems to work a lot of the time. Usually, when I get home I will get her favorite toy to try to distract her so she will forget she is excited and will want to play. But food is a really good idea. Mostly though it is when other people come around. I could be out walking Pancake and someone will stop to pet her and she will pee on them! Yikes . Or if I'm holding Pancake in my arms and a stranger (or anyone else i know who she doesn't see regularly) walks up to see her, she will pee all over me. Now I have never scolded her for this, I will say "no pee, pee on mat" or something like that. I know that these breeds can be nervous doggies and I am so glad Pancake isn't. I wouldn't want to yell at her and scare her or make her feel sad and then have her be scared of people when she loves people so much. I just would like it if she didn't pee on people when they pick her up, she is the nicest best behaved doggie, this is my only concern with her. I don't know if she will outgrow this, I've read that they do. But I don't see really how I could stop her from peeing if I am not around and someone goes to pick her up? I guess I should have included this point in my original post. Thanks for the reply and I would appreciate any other suggestions! |

| Submissive urination is a very common behavior. Some pups outgrow it and some don't. Like it or not, Erin is 100% right on what to do. Pancake cannot control this behavior when she is excited/stressed. Anything that excites or stresses her when she's already so excited will only make it worse. Scolding her for it WILL stress her more. Acknowledging her when you first get home WILL excite her more. Both will cause an increase in the undesired behavior. When Erin said "ignore her for a while", she means IGNORE HER. Pancake is invisible for the first few minutes when you walk in. Do not acknowledge her and, if you want this behavior to stop, do not play with her (it excites her more). Ignore her. When she stops her excitedness and looks like "Gosh, what did I do wrong?", only then, can you see her and VERY calmly acknowledge her. If you don't want her peeing on other people, you need to have them follow the same protocol.
