House Training I just brought a five to six month old Yorkshire Terrier. Before, he lived in a house and they had a big back yard, the owner would just let him out. SO he could do his thing. I am trying to get him peeing at home which is an apartment. This is only the second day of course, there is still a lot of hope for my wonderful Terry. Day 1. I played with him and taught him how to sit. I went out to the garbage room to let him do his thing. He pood right away! SOO SMART! No peeing. I put him in a crate with the cat, since he was barking at the cat, so I decided they should have some alone time. They both slept together. Day 2. I took him out to the garbage room again after he woke up. but half way to the garbage room, which is only 4 steps away from my apartment, he sat and peed in the hallway. (Maybe he likes it because its got marble floors) I than took him the garbage room. No Poo. However, when we both got back in, I realized there was a pee mark on the floor. SHOCKED!!!!! I think the pee stain was from DAY 1. After Breakfast, I took him out to the garbage room. I CARRIED HIM! and he pooed. VERY GOOD! After dinner, I went to the garbage room after 20 minutes and playing some games, he didn't pooed or pee.. I had brought a new pad mat for him and even got him the spray so he could smell it and pee on it. NO LUCK!! Went tot he garbage room every 20 minutes. He doesn't like the pad mat and the smell spray does not seem to work. HE LIKES TO SLEEP ON THE MAT!! After 2 hours later, I decided to take him out and he pee IN THE HALLWAY! I kind of catch him in action, and I place him on the mat straight AWAY..and I soaked up all the PEE onto the mat and I have place it in the kitchen now. I am still waiting for him to poo. My goal is for him to pee in the crate inside the apartment or pee on the news paper or mat. What would be the best spray since mine isn't working, its a japanese brand. What other techique are there to train my Yorkie, he is very smart and he follows me around. I would love him to be prefect and be 100% train. I have time!! I just need the techique. Please advice. Thank you Christine

I trained mine to pads. I confined them to the kitchen during the dfay and put them in crate at night. In the kitchen, I put down pads where ever they wanted to potty. For a while I had about 5 pads down. Once they were using the pads exclusivly, I started to move the pads closer together, just one pad at a time. If they went back to a spot where a pad had been, I set their bed or a toy box over the spot. My kitchen was quite an obstacle course for a while LOL. But eventually I got all the pads moved to one spot, where I wanted them to go. I also put the pad (when I got down to just one) in a shallow, under the bed, storage container to keep it neater.

Follow Up! thanks Jean for replying to me. My dog just pooed in the apartment, I had been teaching him the "HAND HAND " trick and I should have let him gone out.. to the garbage room. Anyways, I have place his poo poo onto the mat with the pee. It's in the kitchen. I am actually wondering, do you feed him in the crate? Leave him water and food in the crate? Or should I leave the water and food in the kitchen next to the mat? I am going to be placing mats in the kitchen now. and see if its works Thanks. Christine

I am having trouble re-training 3-yr old Sophie, whom we just adopted from a happy home (through an acquaintance) about 8 weeks ago. She was trained when we go her except we were told that if she got mad at us she might have a bowel movement on the carpet. We've not had that problem, but she has apparently (through the transition) lost some of her training since she keeps peeing on the carpet. I can't figure out a pattern or reason to it; sometimes it's right after we come back from a walk when she's already stopped to pee many times. Other times it's just seemingly out of the blue. She doesn't give us any clue that she needs to go out, so I've been getting her outside about every 2-4 hours. She does fine in her crate at night. She eats twice a day and has water available all the time. My husband has been very good since this is "my dog" and I work all day. He walks her about every 4 hours or takes her for long walks on the golf course. She's so smart and incredibly lovable, except for this one thing. We've tried keeping her on a leash 100% of the time and that works, but I don't know how to begin to wean her off that. HELP! Sophie's mom
