| "Dirty" dogs...anyone have experience...? I was reading about dogs that are left in areas with their "mess" for long periods of time and how after a while, they just don't care and become "untrainable". This is a concern because some of the dogs we've looked at and were considering were four or five months old and had been cooped up in pet shops for a month or more...and I know pet shops try, but it's kind of hard to stay on top of cleaning 15+ dogs' cages. Does anyone know if they can be house trained? Ever? If there are any certain tricks that can be use to house break them?? "Dorothy" is ripping my heart out... I want so badly to drive down there and scoop her up!! And Harrison too!! Awwww!! Temptation is made worse when we have the funds to scoop them both up!! |

| I don't believe that would make them untrainable. Dogs don't potty outside because they don't want to soil the inside, they potty outside because we insist on it. But I would not buy from a pet shop anyway, because you have no idea where these dogs came from, the looks, size or temperament of the parents or anything about their health history. Good breeders do not have to sell to pet shops. There are plenty of breeders out there. Just get on line and look. |

| I've looked for breeders, no one has anything...at least not a female pup that's not show quality and therefore they're all out of our price ranges. (We have a rainey day savings account, but I refuse to dip into that just to buy a pet.) Even the BYB's only have males and want an arm and a leg for them. These dogs need homes too, it's not their fault some moron bred their parents and then sold them off to a pet shop. If I don't buy them, who will? A BYB that will breed them until they drop? If I can make their lives better, than maybe I should. (And dear God, the first person that says the word "rescue" can kiss my beagle's butt! I've had two bad experiences and would rather give these greedy jerks running the puppy stores my money than the jerks that run the rescues, whom are just as greedy, just in different ways.) I'm only asking because it mentioned "dirty dogs" in the Yorkie book at home and said they would most likely be that way for the rest of their lives... |

| i do agree with you in that these puppies need a good home and i would be torn between purchasing a pet store pup and supporting these breeders at the same time. the pet store in my area will let you see the papers where they came from so maybe ask to see it. also, i dont think they are untrainable. i believe the KEY word here is if you have the TIME, you will be able to train them. if you are working and not home, it may be a tough road ahead. dont let these people make you feel quilty for purchasing a pet store dog. as long as you do your research, you should be fine.

| Thanks Lisa. We're still in the "considering" phase...I can't go down there for at least another week so who knows? They could be gone by then. And we're still keeping our eyes and ears open for a breeder that might be expecting soon and can give us a definite price. |

| I've also met my share of sketchy breeders... Most people won't buy a vehicle from a used cars sales person if the price isn't on the windshield, why are so many willing to buy from breeders that won't give you a definite price on a puppy? And most won't give you that. They'll give you a range. Does that depend on the puppy you want or how much they think they can get from you when they meet you? |

| http://www.ytca.org/breeder3.html#FL Check this out..This is where I found my yorkies breeder. I pulled up the breeders in FL section. There are a ton. Plus these breeders stick with the standard and have to follow code of ethics of the YTCA. In my experience, I found the breeders on this page a lot less pricey than pet store or BYB. Couldn't hurt to look and find a breeder. By the way 3 days is nothing. Your new pup could go 3 weeks with no symptoms and then BAM it just creeps up on you. Most of these breeders give a 1 year health guarantee.

| Thanks, but the Florida ones either do not answer their email/phone calls or are no longer in the business. I started by search there. |

| There are breeders right here in this forum that might have puppies for sale. What is your price range. You might want to start by posting a notice on here in the wanted section. It's good that you are asking questions. You can find yorkies ranging from $500 to $10,000. And there is no guarantee that one is any better than the other. there are sooooo many breeders out there, just start sending out emails. But you're taking your chance with a pet store puppy. You might want to thiink about why they are in the pet store in the first place. If they are such a good deal, whey couldn;'t the breeder sell them. You should never buy a puppy on impulse. Take your time and do you homework and you'll find the right one. Also, Just because the pet store shows you papers, does not mean that those papers even go with that dog. They might not even be giving you the right birthdate or anything. |
