| Potty Punishment Hi everyone, I have a question. Tiki has been doing so well on his potty pads but just as many of you have experienced, it seems like all of a sudden he just goes where ever he wants sometimes. Now, of course its probably part my fault because we get so used to him being so self sufficient we get lazy in watching them like we used to when first training. So my question is... I feel like Tiki really does know where to go on his pads, so when he does go anywhere else he feels he can, I need to punish him more than just bringing him over to his pee pad because he's getting older and I swear he knows where to go. So lately I have been bringing him over to the pad along with whatever he peed on, or the pee wiped up on a paper towel to show him where it should go, and then leaving him (he has the entire kitchen and bathroom where his pee pads are and is then gated from the rest of the house but it is still a rather large area) and leaving him there until he pees again on his pad and then of course I praise him like crazy when I see he has gone on his pad and give him a treat and everything is great again. So do you think myleaving him until he pees again is accomplishing anything? Or should I just stick with the showing him where he should go and forgetting about it after that? Thanks for your help! |

| lexi has been doing the same thing lately, she knows where her pads are and sometimes just goes pee pee right near it.. go figure.. yesterday i caught her going on the rug in the living room, on the way to her wee pad, i screamed NO NO NO... and showed her where her pad was as if she didnt know.. i figured she couldnt hold in 1 second more, i said BAD GIRL, BAD BAD GIRL. she knew she did wrong and hid under the bed... dont leave him until he pees again, just watch him and direct him where to go... sometimes they just slip.. what are you gonna do.. it happens... dont punish him, he wont know why. you gotta catch them when they do it.

| Oops! Hello! Try something a little different don't let him think he has that much of an area to go, plus it will save you money. Try this tie a bell around the door knob, every time the dog goes tell him no and walk him to the door and make him ring the bell, after a while of doing this he will realize what that means, we have 2 yorkies and we have been doing this for along time it does work but it takes a little time and it saved us a lot of money in wee-wee pads. Good Luck! Rob |

| henry rings his bell....sometimes to go potty sometimes if he needs attention. haha. henry never took to the pee-pads though.....i think he can more differentiate between outdoors and indoors....that's why we chose to just train him to go outside. he still definitely goes indoors though. its almost like for a week he'll do REALLY good and ring his bell to go outside, and other weeks it seems like he forgets and gets lazy with it. it's weird. |

| BellaMia, just make sure YOU aren't getting lazy with the praise/rewards for getting it right! That's what happened here - he started consistently ringing the bell and I stopped going out with him and treating him. I reinstituted those procedures and he did great. It wasn't long before I could wean him off of the above, but I still do praise heavily on occasion.

| How old is your pup? Your kitchen area situation sounds exactly like what I have for my pup. But - My pup is a little over 7 months old now - and for the past week or two - I can't believe it - but he's not even going to the bathroom while I'm at work. Granted, I'm only gone for about 6 hours or so, but he has become very good about holding it for that period of time. Isn't this wonderful! And when I walk in - the first thing we do is go outside, and he pees immediately. So, we are beginning to make progress - finally!!! And, I am sure a lot of it is simply his age --- and, because he's older, he has better bladder control. I'm sure a lot of us expect too much too soon with these little guys. They are just too young and (like a baby) pee frequently. It certainly is much easier at my house now that my pup doesn't pee so often. BUT - I'm sure that we should continue gentle potty training from a young age on... it's just that it takes a while and a few months before it all starts coming together. Good luck! Carol Jean |

| yeah, i agree that i have gotten lazy in the past with treats, etc. but i noticed when i get lazy, he gets lazy. these past few weeks though, he has been great. he will either whine to get our attention to go out or ring his bell. henry will go right by the door also when it is raining out. he HATES going out in the rain. |
