| Potty Training Thought https://modernpuppies.com/pottytrain...apartment.aspx is a website for a new method of potty training any dog of any size. I'm not getting this system as I have designed my own system but it is NOT for sale. It is only for my next GSD. I do not recommend or dis-recommend this system as I have never used or known anybody that has used this system. Just thought I would post this for all to watch the video on line and make your own decisions. |

| I personally am not a fan of teaching a dog to go to the bathroom in their crate. I think it’s playing with fire. I also don’t think puppy pads will work with a large breed dog or even any dog over 10 or 15 pounds because it won’t be able to hold all the pee. I do the old fashion method of we sleep in the crate and potty outside.

| My system does not use a crate either. NOR does it allow going on the floor. We have used my system for many years. |

| A doggie door. Easiest way to potty train my dogs. S/He will just have to learn to use one certain spot. Normally called "the spot". Most the time the dogs learn withing a couple of days EXCEPT Prince Charming. Took 18 months for him to do it outside. Then we moved!!! Had to carry a red brick across country so it smelled like the home spot. Learned this when we went to visit my sister just up the road (2 hour drive) and he did not go either for over 12 hours. After that we started carrying the brick with us everywhere we went with his little Highness. Would give almost anything to have him back for just a few moments but it is not possible and I don't think I could ever do another little guy. I've looked at several but never was able to see them as anyone except my Prince Charming. |

| Unless you want to condition a dog to relieve itself during his crate time, this puppy apartment not the best idea. A rigorous daily feeding, walking, play-time, grooming, sleep, crate/same room confinement, all immediately followed by potty trips outdoors after each different activity is over or immediately after sleep, leaving his bed/crate, is the fastest, most reliable way to show a teach a dog to hold his waste until potty trip time outdoors. Once he's learned that whatever you are doing with him, brushing, trimming nails, any grooming, roughhousing, obedience training, naps, quiet times, play sessions, meals, etc., he is then immediately whisked outside so he can relieve himself. Knowing he can always count on you to get him outside after whatever he's been doing is over, teaches him to curtail his urges, knowing you can always be depended on. Over time, he'll learn to look to you once he feels the urge to 'go', as you're the one who always sees to it he gets outside before he's uncomfortable with need. You'll come to know that particular 'look' he'll learn in time to always give you once his urges hit. Knowing you'll always come through reinforces his conditioning to look to you once he has to 'go'. As he ages and can condition himself to holding it until the activity is over, housebreaking is almost done. More conditioning to your routines, the praises/treats he gets for pottying outside, all further reinforce his housebreaking and establish his lifestyle 'rules' that become part of his being and he'll want to stay clean in the house. Dogs prefer pottying outside where they can leave their scent for all nearby critters to 'read', come to learn important things your dog wants to pass along about himself. So going potty outside actually reinforces an age-old genetic natural urge to mark the territory surrounding their housing quarters.

| When I first had Boomer and Thumper I was told they were crate trained and pee pad trained. Well for the first month I came home from work and they peed in their crate. After getting tired of cleaning up the mess I decided gating them with a specific area of pee pads was better less mess to clean up. Come 5 years later with having to crate Thumper 24/7 for the past few weeks he has had a few accidents in the crate even though I have him out 4=6 times a day for a quick potty break. What I learned is that I double layer the pee pads so just the top one needs to be disposed up and much easier clean up. Also when he tried to get out he will tip over his water bowl so that also makes a mess. I am not a fan of the puppy apartment either. Yes at times there will be a mess in a crate but I try to avoid it as much as possible. I have also seen the add for the puppy apartment throughout the years and thought at first great idea but my dogs would not adhere to it knowing them.

If I had a porch or yard it would be a totally different issue.

| I remember as puppies I think they all tried to drag them through the house lol. I could not imagine having my four and living in an apartment but I’m not really in a city with those anyway but I definitely would have to pad train them or potty patch train them. My girls pee a lot at a time.
