| 15 Week Old Seperation Anxiety Hi All! Thank you to anyone with any assistance you can provide!! I have a 15 Week old puppy named Rio that I am having some issues with separation anxiety. We bought a Puppy Apartment to use for him in our town home (https://modernpuppies.com/pottytrain...apartment.aspx). I work from home, so I am with him a LOT. After I got him at 8 weeks my mother was visiting so we only ever put him in his crate when we left the house. I think this was the first wrong decision we made to not put him in his crate more. He is not afraid of the crate and will go into it to WeWe and to sleep when we are around. His issue is when we leave the house, if I close the crate and he wakes up, or if I go upstairs without him. He does not like to be confined or alone. He would also vomit after we returned to the house from crying and whining while we were gone. I give him a Kong when we put him in the crate and leave, that is the only time he ever gets it. I have bought some anxiety spray and a diffuser as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It breaks my heart to see him in such a state when we leave. I know he cries the whole time we are gone. I am not sure if this is something that goes away with time of if there are things that I need to be doing to assist the process. Thank you all! -Riosmom |

| This is a common issue with puppies taken from their mothers to soon. I had similar issues with one of my rescues who I got at 9 weeks. He would get in the shower with you rather then be left alone. Mine never got to vomiting though. If he is making himself sick it becomes a health issue and should have the issue take to the vet. They do make separation anxiety medicine that the vet can prescribe and that really sounds necessary.

| Thank you for your response!! The vomiting only happened on two occasions and it was only clear mucus. It has not happened in about a month. Did your rescue ever grow out of it or is it still a problem? Any suggestions to help get past this? Rio turns 4 months next week and will have his last round of shots. I will talk to the vet about it at that appt. I am also going to start taking him to puppy daycare here and there. Hoping that will help him with socializing with other puppies and to also get more used to being away. I have left him with neighbors for an afternoon as well as with my mother and husband. His issue is not as much being away from me as it is being alone. |

| I threw one of my own shirts in Fabian's pen after wearing it to bed for a few days. It seemed to help. The Adaptil spray... not so much for him. The more regular you can keep your own daily schedule, the quicker the puppy will get used to your comings and goings. We also bought a Furbo dog camera/microphone/treat thrower as a Christmas gift to ourselves this year. I was sure Fabian would be whining/barking all day. It turns out he sleeps way more during weekdays than he does on the weekend when we're home. It brings peace of mind, especially as I can check in and talk to him at any time via the Furbo app on my IPhone. |

A few days ago I bought an ebook by Patricia McConnell "I'll be home soon ....", maybe you can have a look at it! She suggests a long but seemingly effective method. I'm going to start it and will see if it will help. | |
