| Help Pee Pad Training Hello. I am new to the forum and a new Yorkie mom of two sisters. I need some help with pee pad training. They are 5 months now and it seems to have gone backwards in peeing on the pad. They seem to go whenever I'm not looking. They do go on the pads throughout the day. I work from home so I find it hard to watch them constantly all day. Do they need to go back into their crates and be put on a schedule for free time? I don't know if I could handle all the crying they will do. My husband and I love them to bits and would like them to be indoor trained instead of outdoors. Our winters are long and cold here. H E L P and thank you for listening and any advise. |

| Hi There! I work from home as well, so I understand the challenges it sometimes faces with kids, animals, calls, computers etc. I think you should go back to square one with the puppies and do crate to puppy pad. The whining can be helped by putting a blanket over the crate and evetually the puppies will settle. Have the crates within eye sight of you and have the pads in accessible places where you can take the puppies right away. I'd suggest an hour schedule, example below: Overnight: Puppies in crates 8am: Puppies wake up and to puppy pads 8:15-8:30 Breakfast 8:30-:845 play time 8:45: Potty time to pads, (when potty lots of praise with treats) 8:45-9 back in crate I'd do this rotation until 7pm or so. I think you guys can get throug this period and puppies will be trained in no time. To save any carpets, rugs, etc I'd also invest in a puppy gate to block the puppies from where you don't want them to go. My Emma was gated off from going upstairs where our carpet is and she's learned that she can't go upstairs (even if the gate is down) unless she's with me or my daughter. She has gotten comfortable with even staying downstairs solo to people watch out the windows. In a year shes gotten reliable with potty training granted our difference is that we go outside but the consistency I did with the crate to outdoors helped tremendously.

| I never liked crates because mine would just pee in their crate. Instead a I gate off the kitchen area. They have lots of space to play, sleep, and pee. What I did learn was I had to put multiple pee pads down as they would just pee in one general area and if I only had one pad would miss it. I also work all day so having multiple pads out helps. When I work from home if I was to crate/gate my babies they would whine and cry the entire time. Its hard sometimes as I need to be on the computer and all they want to do is get belly rubs. Not sure if this helps but just sharing my experience.

| I have noticed they pee in the general areas of the pads but not necessarily on them. I can't afford to replace a pee pad for just one pee (if that's why they don't pee on it) What if I cut the pads in half or even quarters and place them around, do you think it will help them pee on a clean pad? |

A lot of folks in washable potty pads to help with the cost of the puppy pads. Washable and reusable dog and puppy pee pads, belly bands, and diapers by T. Bumpkins & Co. Here's a YT member who makes them but you can also find some on amazon. I would worry that by you cutting them they may "miss" the spot and you'll be cleaning floors anyway.

This is really good if you have a washer/dryer in your apt/house. I wish I could use them but I live in an apartment without a washer/dryer and would need to go to the laundry mat every day.

Do you have a balcony ? If so you could either do a sod box and train that way. Litter box training is also an option but I’d it where me I’d always include the crate training method then take puppy to the litter box or sod on the balcony . Sometimes you’ve got to get creative with your training to do what works best for your home.

| I put in a weather proof doggie door. They were crate trained but now they all step out do their business and come right back in. Instead of using the whole back yard I put in no dig fence from Lowe's. I got some Fake turf that lets the Urine pass throw and simple green that washes it all off. Simple Green will not hurt the environment and smells good. When they poop I have the scoop and built a disposal septic tank for dogs beyond the no dig fence. I dump rid ex in and it works extremely well for environmentally friendly clean up. Just some thoughts on easy fixes for indoor dogs. |
