| Rescued 14 month old using kennel as potty spot Hi there, I'm grateful I found you. I hope you can help. I just rescued a little 14 month old female 4 days ago. She has been trained to go outside to potty, and will urinate outside. However, her previous owners said "no amount of walking time" will get her have a BM outside. Instead, she does it in her kennel! hmmmm, everything I've ever learned is that their kennel is a spot they would NEVER dirty. I've also just read that if they are unkept, and smelly, they ware more likely to do this. Unfortunately, when I got her (Gemma) she was a matted mess. I had to have her shaved all the way down, as the mats were so intense, all over. I'm assuming that she would go in her kennel at previous home, lay in her mess and they would not wash her or her kennel out. I just read "how to housebreak your do in 7 days" by Kalstone. I'm following it to the letter and working with her to break her of this. I have a brand new kennel for her too. Last night I made sure that she was walked and pottied just before bed. She wet and had a small stool. Of course today, I've washed everything, sanitized her tray, will give her another bath and go from there. any other suggestions? She is a precious little thing and I want to correct this habit. Now - feeding her. Most posts I've seen say 2x a day. Kalstone says over a year, then just once a day. Once a day, would certainly help stop the defecating during the night. Other thoughts? Feelings? words of wisdom. . txxx L |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | It's possible she's a puppy mill puppy but I would also check medical reasons, just in case...the last thing I might try would ne a play pen or exercise pen with a puppy pad in it to see if she will use the puppy pad instead. I'm not an expert and Im sure someone else will chime in but I would make a vet appt. and try the pee pad...Good luck and Im glad you rescued her😀 |

| I think the play pen idea is good so that she can get out of the kennel if she needs to potty. Wishing you luck , thank goodness you rescued her as it sounds as if she was in a horrible situation . It will take time to retrain her in to not pot tying in her kennel but I'm sure with patience you will get there .

| Feeding twice a day.::: I have always feed 2 x's a day, regardless of their age. If you feed 1 cup of food, split that in 1/2, 1/2 cup in the morning, the other half in evening. Have a set feeding schedule for both meals, must be same time in the morning and evening, you MUST be consistent with the feeding schedule. Walk 20 to 30 minutes after eating, even if she has already peed or pooped, still walk her. Dogs are creatures of habit. They have built in clocks, she will learn what time she eats, what time she gets walked. Praise and give treats when she gets it right. This is a 14 month old pup that will need a lot of patience and CONSISTENCY. I never kennel / crate trained any of my pups, so I have no suggestions / advise on that. Hopefully other members can offer up suggestions / advise on her using her kennel as her potty. Also THANK YOU for rescuing this little girl.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Feeding scheduke You may want to change her feeding schedule. The playpen is an excellent idea. This always seems to work for our customers. Thank you for rescuing. My jaz rescued me 😍😍

| Thank you all SO much!! The pen idea is a great idea. I do have an appointment with the Vet and will definitely get this figured out. Gemma is just delightful! I had two Yorkie's' until 2000. Then when I got married, a precious black lab was in the family. She passed 2.5 years ago. We weren't looking for another dog, right now, and wasn't even sure it would be a Yorkie, but oh my, she's so precious and fun to have around. I am concerned about our yard. We have two acres on a River. We are fenced in, but of course, the big rod iron fence has slats that any Yorkie, even a bigger one, could get through. It held a lab in, but won't hold her in. As I've read the posts about Hawk's attacking Yorkie's that concerns me - a LOT. I hate to keep her inside when we are out. We spend a lot of time out there in the summer. If I have to give her up, to protect her, I will do that, yet would appreciate your insights in this too. Very grateful for your time and insights. Thanks!! Gemma says Thank you too! L |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | You can take her outside on a lead that allows her some length to run around but you can also train her to stay near you when you are outside. It takes a little time but it's worth it in case she ever accidentally gets outside. |

| Success this am ) Gemma went poop outside on our walk. That's the first. IN fact, her previous owners said she wouldn't do it. She did not pee in her kennel last night either. Feeling hopeful )) |
