Rescued 14 month old using kennel as potty spot Hi there,
I'm grateful I found you. I hope you can help.
I just rescued a little 14 month old female 4 days ago. She has been trained to go outside to potty, and will urinate outside. However, her previous owners said "no amount of walking time" will get her have a BM outside. Instead, she does it in her kennel!
hmmmm, everything I've ever learned is that their kennel is a spot they would NEVER dirty. I've also just read that if they are unkept, and smelly, they ware more likely to do this. Unfortunately, when I got her (Gemma) she was a matted mess. I had to have her shaved all the way down, as the mats were so intense, all over. I'm assuming that she would go in her kennel at previous home, lay in her mess and they would not wash her or her kennel out.
I just read "how to housebreak your do in 7 days" by Kalstone. I'm following it to the letter and working with her to break her of this. I have a brand new kennel for her too.
Last night I made sure that she was walked and pottied just before bed. She wet and had a small stool. Of course today, I've washed everything, sanitized her tray, will give her another bath and go from there.
any other suggestions? She is a precious little thing and I want to correct this habit.
Now - feeding her. Most posts I've seen say 2x a day. Kalstone says over a year, then just once a day. Once a day, would certainly help stop the defecating during the night.
Other thoughts? Feelings? words of wisdom. .
