| How long... How long do you wait outside for your pup to go potty outdoors? I am just curious...and I know every dog is different! I know with maggie, just because she runs up to the door it does not mean she doesn't have to go I usually wait outside with her for about 5 minutes (saying go potty) and then if she still hasnt gone, we go back in...wondering if I need to give her more time. Also, if your dog just goes #1 or just goes #2, do wait for them to do the other? Maggie doesn't usually do both in the same trip outside, but again, maybe I am not giving her enough time. And, again, I know every dog is different. I ask because we have had a few indoor accidents and wonder if I am maybe rushing her outside. Thanks!

| My adopted 3 y/o boy that I have 1 year now,was trained to make out doors, he was leash walked. When I first got him last Nov. I took him to the back yard where he could run free, in his excitement of being off leash and able to have all this freedom he would poop then run up the deck wanting to get back in the house, as he ran past me I would say, do pee-pee, he would turn around like to say, oh yeah I forgot about about that, then come back, make his pee-pee then head back to the house. Last winter we had a lot of snow, to deep for him to use the yard, my other dogs were never allowed to use the deck as their toilet, also at that time I had a pee-poop dog run for them, This I removed 2 years ago because I had just one dog now, she was old and was making on paper in the laundry room. With Cody last winter was a hard winter, so I had him use the deck, which took several weeks to get him to go there because he preferred the back yard. Now he knows to use the deck, when he wakes up in the morning, he will only pee outside, he eats at 7AM then has to go out right away to poop. He does more pee-pee during the day then poop, but he poops 4 times a day. Many times he will do one or the other, sometimes he does both. But, Cody is now 3 years old. Depending on how old your baby is and how well house broken she is, and is she leash walked or uses the yard, There is a big difference when leash walked opposed to opening your door and letting them out. If she uses the yard and makes just a pee-pee I would keep repeating make poo-poo, wait 10 minutes, if she doesn't make come in the house, same with a poop and no pee, again give 10 minutes, if nothing come in. Cody will always let me know when he needs to go out, I don't know if your baby does this. But if you are giving her only 5 minutes I don't think this is long enough for her to find "that perfect" pee or poo spot, so try and additional 5 minutes, making it 10 minutes. Good luck

| Thanks for the great feedback! Maggie is 4 but was a mill rescue and so I consider her "puppy" as far as training goes...she does not walk politely on a leash (we are working on it!), and will not tell me when she needs to go out so I try to just stick to a strict schedule and put her in her crate if I can't be in the room (but I work from home so its not often). I think you are right, that I need to stay out longer She likes to run up and down the steps and during those first 5 min might not even have potty on the mind, she's probably just thinking "steps! steps! steps!" PS. As I write this she is sleeping and has the hiccups - so CUTE! lol

| Bless you for rescuing her and yes a puppy as far as all training goes, how long do you have her. Since you work from home and she is crated, scheduling a potty time is very good. Dogs are creatures of habit, stick to the routine, make sure you take her out to potty at the same time everyday, no matter what the weather is. She will learn when it's potty time. Not knowing how long you have her and by going on my personal experience from my newly adopted boy. Cody was a city boy and leashed walked for 2 1/2 years. I have to assume he was never left off leash. Now he lives in the country, has a big back yard. The day I took him home and introduced him to his new back yard, he was like a grey hound, he ran and ran and ran, I could hear him singing "Born Free" lol. This was new to him, then the sniffing began, he was soooo happy and excited he didn't make lol, he was running from yard to deck to yard, when he got tired he was heading to the house, I had to tell him pee-pee and poo-poo lol and he came back like "it's ok I pee & Poo in this Paradise lol. This went on for one week, always had to remind him he has to make. So not knowing how long you have your little girl, this new freedom she now has may be consumed with running, roaming, sniffing, excitement, they forget they have to make. Her being a mill dog, sleeping, eating and pee & poo all in the same crate. Never out of it, no human contact, now her new life is one of freedom, she may just be enjoying the freedom and forgets it's ok to make outside the crate. Now knowing she is a mill baby, I would definitely give her more time outside, give her time to do her play thing and sniffing time, then give her, her potty command words, do # 1 and do # 2 if those are the words for pee-pee and poo-poo, depending on how many years she was a mill dog and always crated, it may take more time for her to learn it's ok to potty outside her crate.

| Your Cody sounds so SWEET! And so lucky to have such a lovely big backyard! We rescued Maggie about 4 months ago, she has made great strides in that time. Its so funny, we too have a large grass yard, and maggie still just races around on the concrete patio! Silly girl, I keep telling her the WHOLE fenced yard is hers for the taking! Anyways, just yesterday and today I kept her out 10 min instead of 5 and she did eventually go and we only had one accident (and that was when our neighbor came over and she got very happy and excited hehe).
