| Why are Yorkies so hard to Potty Train??? I have been trying to Potty Train my Yorkie for 6 months. As long as I take her out every two hours she will Pee. She always Poops inside. I could take her out every ten minutes and she will still Poop inside. If I go off my two hour routine, she will look right at me and Pee on the rug. Please give me some hope that my Home will not be her Potty forever. Thank you... |

hang a bell on the door with wool or soemthing- every tiem you go outside- you ring the bell (make sure it is at her level) and tell her good girl- then start using her nose to push the bell and tell her good girl- eventually she is going to get it that she rings the bell- she goes outside- she pees/poops she gets treats hang in there- she'll get it | |

| Potty Train When I 1st got my yorkie, some 17 years ago, I kept Picasso in a small carrier during the day when I was at work. I would come home at lunch, take him out, and put him back in until I came home. THis worked for me, as I assumed he got tired of being in the poop and pee, so he learned. Of course, he did slip every so often, normal for a child I guess. Give it time, I am sure it will work and try those pee pads, they are helpful, because they absorb. Cheers from NC ~ Mark RIP Picasso, I love you! |

| I think Yorkies are harder to housetrain because of three things: 1. It takes longer and people give up. Most need consistent training until they are 10months-18 months old before they are fully trained. 2. They are small and they have to go out a lot, frustrating owners and giving them an opportunity to have accidents. 3. People don't treat them like dogs - if you had a lab would you tolerate peeing on the floor or pooping in the closet? Not a chance. Crate training and outdoor training are perfectly acceptable. Would you let a lab use pee-pads? Ha! My two are housetrained and they ring a bell to go outside and go out on leashes even when its 0 degrees in the middle of a Chicago Deep Freeze. Loki's 4 and he's survived so far! House training is no fun and it's like having a 2nd full time job. If the bell rings when your favorite tv show is on, you have to jump up and take them out. You have to watch them every second they are not in their crate, carry treats in your pocket and shove one in their mouth the second they pee outside (so they know why they are getting the treat!) and it helps to invest in a good steam cleaner for the first 10 months or so If you are consistent you'll be fine. First they start to only have accidents every couple weeks and then when you think they will never get it, they do!

| I have the same problem I've had Max since the end of July and he's gotten to where he'll tell me he has to go outside to pee, but 10 min later after he's back in....there's poo on the floor and thank goodness I have laminated flooring. The thing of it is, he knows, he's hiding before I find it. I know there's light at the end of the tunnel and I'm being patient....trust me, a lot of patience!! I know since I've gotten Romeo and been trying to train him just as well, Max seems to be telling me more when he has to go out.....so I'm with you, and I'm sending good luck sprinkles your way! |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Max goes just outside the door or to the back yard to pee, now poop is another story, I found out that if I walked him, then he would poo, now he goes out every time he asks for#1, and gets walked twice a day, early morning late afternoon, for #2.

| Door Bell Is it easy to train them to use the Bell. I do reward her every single time she goes. I take her out every two hours. She will be a Year old in Jan. She never lets me know when she has to go. I really appreciate all the advice from other Yorkie owners.. Thanks again..Maxi |

| Housetraining our 4 month old Shorkie puppy Help! We brought our Shorkie puppy, Sadie, home on November 24th. She was born on August 22nd and was 3 months old when we got her. My question is-is she going to be harder to house train since the breeder did not housetrain her at all? There are times when she seems to need to go out and when we take her out she doesn't do anything. She sometimes uses the house training pads and usually goes bm on the tile in the bathroom. She sleeps in her crate at night and we take her out first thing in the morning. We do have the bells hung at the door. I'm beginning to get discouraged. Our last puppy a Lab Siberian Husky we had 14 years ago trained quickly. I've read that small breeds are harder to house train. It was also summer when we got our last dog who we just had to put to sleep on October 3rd. Sadie is learning to be house trained in the winter, which I think really makes a difference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We have been working on house training her for a month and she still has several accidents. |

| Potty training I have a 3.5 lb, 9 month old male and he goes to potty outside....in the cold and in the rain! He has done so well at not having many accidents inside..my fault when he did. I am just now understanding his cue to go outside. I was so used to just picking him up and taking him outside. He is great at getting his business over with pronto! I started paying more attention to his little habits. He will come up to me and jump on my legs or bark if he is in the play pen. When I realized that he was telling me that he had to go do his business, I felt like giving myself a treat and telling myself ," good job mama, your getting it! "Be consistent. It pays off. I love the bell idea but Ruben will play with too much! Does my boy love toys?! Good luck. Happy New Year Beth |

| Confinement and routine are a must IMO til at least the age of 2. It is us, the humans, who need the training not the dogs usually. Mine were accidental free after 6 months of age but I has a human hawk unless they were in there playpen/confined. Mine never pottyed in their crib/beds. If they made any tiny sign out the door we went. They were afraid to smell anything on the ground inside because I would immediately whisk them outside to potty! If they went near a door that let to outside I would take them out immediately even if they had just gone potty. Potty play potty. Potty sleep potty. Potty eat potty. Life revolved around potty for them and still does. Even as adults mine typically go outside every 3-4 hours during the day. Overnight they will hold it from 11p to 6or 7am.

YT 2000 Club Member | Do Yorkies get mad when we leave them alone for awhile? My JoJo usually goes outside to do his business but when I leave him and Spud in the kitchen area with a dog door to the yard, he will pee on the blanket on the floor. I still cannot trust him in the family room. Yes, Yorkies are hard to train and you cannot trust this male Yorkie when you are gone out! Good thing God created him cute or he would be in big dog trouble! |

| I'm sorry that you're having so many potty issues still. =( Blazer is 7 months now and has been fully potty trained, IMO, for almost two months. At least, it's been at least that long since he has had any sort of accident in the house. I'm just starting to trust him when I leave the house and so far so good with that, too. Blazer has been great about going to the door when he needs to go out and when I decorated for Christmas and had bells hanging on the door he started dinging those to go out. Actually, he makes sure to alert me when my big dog needs to go out, too. Any excuse to get outside, I guess! I think it has been easier for me than for some because I am a stay at home mom. I'm ALWAYS here. I also, have been with Blazer for all but 4 days of his entire life. I started working on potty training with him the day I brought him home. Persistance and consistancy and keys for us. Oh, and I'm stern with him. I praise him when he does well and I reprimand him when he is bad- that goes for everything, not just potty training. I tried ignoring the bad but that didn't work for us so now he gets to hear "NO!" "BAD!" "DROP!" "LEAVE IT!" when neccessary.
