I need advice on potty training my dog! So my dog is 7 months and I'm getting tired of trying to potty train her. For the 4 and a half months I got her I've been trying to train her. In my room I always have a clean pee pad on the spot I notice she goes pee. And she does go pee on it(most of the time). When I take her outside she always does her business and I always reward her. She knows that I reward her when she goes pee outside and she knows that I spank her and scowl at her when she does it on the carpet. I have a gate where I can put on my bedroom door so she won't get out. Since she's older I don't keep her much in the crate but instead made my room into her room. Well one thing she does which really ticks me off is if I'm leaving my room even to just go to the bathroom, and put the gate so she won't get out, she pee's right next to the door. She does it all the time!! And the bad part is she knows she did wrong because right when I'm back in my room she jumps on my bed and acts depressed. I don't know what to do anymore. With her it seems like she moves one step forward and two steps back. I will never get rid of her but I have to have her train. I'm about to start nurse school and I'm moving to my grandma's house and I'm taking her with me. My grandma told me she has to be trained if I want to keep her inside. I don't want my dog to be an outdoor dog she's a Yorkie they'll steal her. Can anyone please help me. I'm just so stressed out about this situation.

sounds like she gets stressed when you leave so she pees right where you saw her last. Jess did that too. I would start at square one. That means put her in a pen in your room (don't give her run of the room she has to earn it) put in a bed water/food and cover the rest with pee pads. as she consistently goes on a pad remove them one by one until she no longer goes anywhere but the pee pad. You can get pens at petmart, craigslist, a lot of places. If your trying to just out door train her your going to have to most likely crate train. That's a lot of time getting up at night etc. I know its hard but I can tell you all of a sudden it clicks with them. Almost overnight. Jess still has very occasional accidents but shes 99% pad trained. I wouldn't spank her but be firm when she does make a mess and say "no no" also when she does pad pee make sure you go crazy happy and give her a treat. Don't give any treats unless she did her business where you want her to.

Look at all the training help information on Yorkie Talk If you go to the General Training Questions and also the Yorkie Talk Forums, you will see several good answers and advice about potty training!! Yorkies are little and need to either be taken outside on a schedule if you are outdoor training, like I did, and they Cannot be allowed to run all through the whole house if you are trying to house train or outdoor train them. You need to keep them in just the main rooms where you are actually spending most of your time with them...set a timer when they are little and take them out when it goes off....especially, 15-25 minutes after meals or drinking! We don't allow our Yorkie to go into the main living room or dining room at all. He spends his time witb me in the den and kitchen..or upsairs t.v. room. We used treats and metal doggie stakes outside that I put his leash over ... I always said Pee-pee, when I took him there. I could see him from the door, and went out to praise and give him a soft meat treat as soon as I saw him pee!!! At first I tried walking him around the yard, but he did much better with one or two little metal dog stakes near different bushes...you don't want them in all sun or all cold shade...so We have two locations in the yard depending on the sunshine & weather. He has also has a raincoat and will pee off the ends of the porch on to the perriwinkle groundcover, and then scoots back onto the porch and we both scamper back inside the kitchen...I dry his paws off with his "pup towel" I keep under the kitchen sink! I always take him outdoors before I go to Dr. Appts or the grocery store. He is 3 years old and will wait to go again as soon as I get back home. When he was little, I used his crate in the den for him to wait inside. But, I made sure he had peed & pooped every early a.m. Then, he would go to his outside metal stake areas and always got a treat! Clean up the outdoor poop with kleenex and just flush in your downstairs toilet. Take outdoors a lot till it is a habit and give treats!!

Well, first off don't ever spank a yorkie they are small and you can hurt them. It's been proven that spanking them or rubbing their noses in it or scowling does nothing to train the dog. They can also get scared of you and pee everywhere as a sign of submission from you hitting. Do you give treats when the dog does go where you want it to? Also is your room carpeted? A lot of the time dogs can't tell the difference in texture between a soft cushy pee pad and carpet, which is why most trainers recommend you make them go outside on grass, or use a potty pad on hard floor like tile or laminate. The yorkie goes on the bed and acts depressed because he knows there is pee on the floor and knows you are going to hit him for it but doesn't understand WHY. You need to crate train this yorkie, they are a stubborn breed and like to see what they can get away with, its in their nature. They won't be stubborn though if what you have to offer is more interesting than what they want to do, if they want to walk on the carpet and go pee but know if they go on the pad there is a big special treat to be had, they will go on the pad. One of the reasons it's so easy to train dogs to pee outside is because grass has a different texture, and smell than any indoor floors and this is the same for litterbox training a dog too, see if you can train him to go in something with a unique texture like a litter box or a dog potty with fake grass if you don't want him outside at all. Keep him in a crate and when he whines to go out don't play with him or do anything with him; first thing is to take him directly to the spot you want him to go and it can be repetitive at first and you might spend half an hour putting him back on the spot if he tried to walk away. DO NOT hold the dog in place or tether them to force them to go on a spot, it won't work in your favor they need to learn their way... Keep him there like that until a potty is had, then give praises, snuggles, treats and out of the crate play/social time for an hour then see if there is another potty to be had, if not put him back in the crate and in 3 hours or so he'll probably whine to go potty...repeat repeat repeat it's all about consistency and rewards. Soon, he will learn that potty where you put him equals treats, play time, rewards and he will learn fast. They are inquisitive and like to roam around, sniff things, explore and just giving them that doesn't work. There are lots of books and info online about the NILF method ( nothing in life is free ) and it works great! Don't lose hope, it'll work out you just have to really push for it.

I wouldn't physically discipline the dog while potty training. If you want to scare the dog, roll up a wad of newspaper and smack your hand to make a sound, or smack the ground. Whatever you do, if you feel like you must hit the dog, DO NOT hit the dog on the snout. Never hit a dog, especially a yorkie, on the snout - you can kill the dog or break his snout. Hitting a dog while potty training, as said above, will not help train the dog at all. That being said, my dog took forever to potty train. He was kennel caged at night (small kennel, just enough for him to move around and sleep. I would stuff the shirt I wore that day in there and then let him out in the morning. As far as I remember, he never peed in the kennel. He was really good and slept through the night. Once I stopped that and let him sleep with me, he was still not fully potty trained. When I left the house, I would keep him fenced in the kitchen with a pad. If he peed on the pad, I would move it outside, and then take him out to the pad so that he would pee on it outside and try to teach him that way. In the house though, sometimes he would just walk over and take a piss right on my bed. It wasn't so bad though because his pee was like the size of a 50 cent piece and most times was so light it didn't even penetrate the sheet to the mattress. All of that being said, he eventually just stopped going in the house with on his own at about a year. I never had a dog take that long. I had dogs that were potty trained withing 2 weeks of bringing them home - and then there was Cesar. Look around on this forum - it's very common. Many Yorkies are extremely difficult to house break.
