Look at all the training help information on Yorkie Talk If you go to the General Training Questions and also the Yorkie Talk Forums, you will see several good answers and advice about potty training!!
Yorkies are little and need to either be taken outside on a schedule if you are outdoor training, like I did, and they Cannot be allowed to run all through the whole house if you are trying to house train or outdoor train them. You need to keep them in just the main rooms where you are actually spending most of your time with them...set a timer when they are little and take them out when it goes off....especially, 15-25 minutes after meals or drinking!
We don't allow our Yorkie to go into the main living room or dining room at all.
He spends his time witb me in the den and kitchen..or upsairs t.v. room.
We used treats and metal doggie stakes outside that I put his leash over ... I always said Pee-pee, when I took him there. I could see him from the door, and went out to praise and give him a soft meat treat as soon as I saw him pee!!!
At first I tried walking him around the yard, but he did much better with one or two little metal dog stakes near different bushes...you don't want them in all sun or all cold shade...so We have two locations in the yard depending on the sunshine & weather.
He has also has a raincoat and will pee off the ends of the porch on to the perriwinkle groundcover, and then scoots back onto the porch and we both scamper back inside the kitchen...I dry his paws off with his "pup towel" I keep under the kitchen sink! I always take him outdoors before I go to Dr. Appts or the grocery store. He is 3 years old and will wait to go again as soon as I get back home. When he was little, I used his crate in the den for him to wait inside. But, I made sure he had peed & pooped every early a.m. Then, he would go to his outside metal stake areas and always got a treat! Clean up the outdoor poop with kleenex and just flush in your downstairs toilet. Take outdoors a lot till it is a habit and give treats!! |
