| From potty training to potty trained We have been using 'bell method' to potty train our four month old puppy, Simba for two month now. Now, he would sit by the door or ring the bell to signal us he needs to go and sometimes if we didn't see him right away, he would also wait. Accidents still happens, when he's excited, too lazy to go, or out of bathe. The number of accidents is till manageable. He usually leave one pee on the pee pad in his crate during the day ( 9am to 5pm). He sleeps a lot during the day also. Once we get home, he would ask for potty outside very often (every 15 min sometimes). I know sometimes he just wants to go outside and play or mark... We feed him in the morning and around 6 pm now, and he has water all day. Eventually, I would hope we only need to take him out after we get home (5:30 ish), after dinner (7:30 ish) and before bed (10:30 ish). When and how does the transaction happen for puppies go from potty training stage to potty trained? |

| Hmmm, can't help. Huey is 'officially' potty trained and will let us know when he wants out, but he still makes 50% of his potties (1&2) inside. Peepee I'm sure is marking, poopoo is probably because no one is home or we are asleep. So, at 4 years old, we still keep pads down and should own stock in 'Natures Miracle'.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | All pups are different and catch on at different ages and progress depending on the amount of training they have. If he knows what to do and where to do it I would suggest that in order to get him to the door to signal for potty time every time and not some of the time that you. Slowly start moving those pee pads closer and closer to the door where you take him in and out of for potty time. a few feet every other day and I would say within a week or two have them right at the door. That way he can signal (ring the bell) every time, no ifs or and about it. He will be right there and there should be no excuse for him not to ring the bell when he needs to go. Plus another option is to work on his come and sit commands you can easily train him to come to you where every you are to ask to be let outside. You can find instructions on how this method works on my site below.

| Four months is still really young to be considered "trained". Continue to reinforce "potty outside" with the bells and don't make your pup wait. Is he on his own from 6 AM until you get home from work? That's a really long time! You might try a little treat for potty when he does his duty outside, but no treat for just wanting to be outside. We love the bells and recommend them for all owners and their pups.

| Thanks all. He's home by himself from 9 to 5. It's long for him, but we both have to work during the day. He usually sleeps it through and by 3 to 4, he is busy making a snow with his pee pads in the pen. We did try to give him treats when its a real potty trip and no treat when its "fake". Not much difference... We will keep taking him outside as soon and often as he signals and we started our daily walk, that seems fulfill his curiosity about the world outside |

| use washable pee pads (walmart baby section) for now. He cant shred them. 8 hours is a REALLY long time to hold it for a dog that young. We always give Jess a pad, even in her crate at night and she is 1.5. She very rarely makes it till morning but she goes to bed with the girls at around 830 and isn't up till 630 when I let her out |

We have no problem if he uses his pads in the pen, just abusing the bell is annoying, but we will stick to the rule "bell, outside, potty" and get him well exercised

| Bell training method? Is there a site where I can read up on the bell training method? I get the general idea, but would like to learn more. |

Now, Simba would sit by the door, if we don't take him outside right away or we didn't see him, he would then ring the bell.
